CATALYST and HL2 Thread

Guys can you make this one a sticky.

First of all use CATALYST 4.12 beta for this game. Second keep only HL2 issues in this thread. Nothing else.

I want a central thread to track any issues.

I have played it for the past hour and a half....oooops.. I mean I have been testing it as part of my job for the past hour and a half, and have found no problems.

Except on occasional stutter as it loads up stuff. The stutter also happens in as characters talk on occasion. Anyways thats not catalyst related.

I have seen at times when going by a door in HL2, you are able to walk through, instances of the door flashing (disappear and reappear) and being able to see what is on the other side. I am using the Beta 4.12s.

I am running it on 9800 Pro with Cat's 4.12 beta.

It runs great on 1280x1024 wit 4xaa && 4xaniso!

Hoever it stutters sometimes a little bit when you enable vsync, to get rid of the tearing.

Is there any option in HL2 or in the driver to enable Triple Buffer, which would probably solve the problem?

Pissed Skippy the bush kangaroo

informato1280 x 1024
9800 Non Pro
128 Megs of video ram

Athlon 64 3000+
Asus K8V SE Deluxe Mobo
1 gig of DDR3200

Audigy 2 Platinum

It's a little skippy at times, sometimes more than others. When it skips the audio "pops" or jumps, and the screen jumps a little, like it's dropping frames.

Someone on the planethalf-life forums suggested it might be caching level data.

Most obvious at the start when the bearded guy is talking on the video screen as you get off the train, also a little apparent in the G-Man's speech.

Seems to improve if I make texture quality medium, but HL2 itself says it could/should be high. Also improved by enabling preloading.

Best improvement brought about by a huge overclock :-)

Terry,

My problem is the lack of FPS when water shows up. I'll drop down to the 20's and lower and the screen moves/jumps horribly damn near giving me a headache. It's weird because the water in de_aztec for CS:Source does not give this huge drop in FPS. Even just a little bit of water in view is enough to kill the fps.

My specs: AMD FX53, BBA X800XT PE, 1gig OCZ RAM, 520w PSU OCZ, XP PRO SP2.

HL2 Settings: 1600x1200, 6x AA, 16x AF, Reflect All
Changing it to Reflect World has 0 effect.

I will try to go down to 2x AA and 8x AF tonight and see if that makes a diff. Any ideas? Rest of the game is perfect so far (played about 3hours) only water causes issues.

Thanks!

Hi

I`m running an XT800, played plenty of Half Life today, 1st couple of hours on the 4.11 drivers, last 3 hours (sad I know) on the 4.12

Did notice a small glithc, it was like textures very occasionally, "spiked" out from an object to the crosshairs, this was very rare. You ended up with very thin triangles from the corner of an object to the centre of the screen. Only get one or two at a time. Reboot (after 30 mins) appears to have fixed it, did think about reverting to 4.11 but did`nt see any in last hour or so. Though that was all outdoor stuff, the spikes occured "indoors"!!

Gonna try again now (HL2 is bloody good!!!)

For what its worth, Rome:Total War also gives the occasional spike, this seems to happen less and less with each new driver version. Planetside has become unplayable since fitting the XT800. Sorry if that bit is off topic.

Cheers

Anyone with 9600XT have problem with 4.12 in HL2?
I got like purple colour textures showing up everywhere. I had to switch back to 4.11 as a result.
Anyone know a fix for this for 4.12?
Thanks

I get that "stutter" too... How do you enable preloading? Anyways, hopefully steam patches will fix this... And water on reflect all kills my PC..

Can you do me a favor. Download the 4.12 beta again and reinstall it. I have a feeling your problem will go away.

FYI today we updated the beta to include win2k and fix one bug that caused our animusic demo to have purple hues. So this might fix your problem. Let me know

Preloading is a command line option (choose Launch Options on the HL2 properties in Steam). The relevant line I'm using it:

-console -preload -mat_preloadshaders

Which enables the console, and some preloading of assets.

Will it be okay to use Omega's 4.10 beta's instead of the new 4.12 betas? I really like Omega's and I'm not to excited about loosing them for the offical (although beta) ones.

Will the old 4.10's work fine? or will I be forced to use the 4.12's so that the game works? TIA

I'm using the 2.5.90 (beta) Omega's with great success. We have similar systems and you should have no problems.

So both you guys have an AMD system. We thought so.

If anyone has flashing textures on a non-AMD system let me know. We are focusing on investigating based on the assumption it manifests only on AMD based systems

I have this very same problem and I have re-installed the updated 4.12 beta too. Here are several screenshots I took where all the errors occure right upto where you first meet some water (I didn't go any further) >>> http://www.hoolak.com/hl2_images/
I seemed to get these using 4.11 too. With 4.10, I remember CS:S having problems loading hostage models on Hostage maps (several others had this I saw on Steam forums).
It all worked fine with 4.9 and the Omega 4.10b.

Really hope this can be sorted soon.
I'm running Radeon 9600XT, Athlon XP 2800+, 1GB RAM, Audigy Platinum.

Thanks
