Default Post 9700... unstable drivers?

Anyone here experienced a blank screen after the XP loading screen on start up with the Radeon 9700?

I had to restore back to an earlier point in Windows (via Safemode) to just get my desktop. Basically the computer would load up as normal, but just before the ol' blue welcome screen it would simply go black and stay like that. After hitting reset a number of times without it getting past the same spot, I went into safemode when upon it notified me that it was going to send an error report due to perceived problems with the display drivers. Gah!

The drivers were the newest Catalyst drivers available. Damnit. I reformatted as I had until yesterday been using a Herc 3d Prophet 2 (bit of jump in performance...heheheh) however even from a fresh install, once the drivers where on, it took a further two resets before I got into the desktop.

I've scoured the ATi website with no joy. Anyone heard of this before? Any help would be most ... helpful!

Here are my specs:

Athlon 1.4
Gigabyte GA-7DX Mobo
512mb of Crucial DDR
Gigabyte Maya 2 GV-R 9700 PRO
300W PSU
DVD and CDRW
40gig Maxtor

Apologies in advance... I'm a tad n00bish.

same problem...

Got the same problem with Radeon 9000 and Windows XP. The last beta catalyst work better but still have problems. Try then (7.79b)
I've seen many people with this problem so I supose the problem is the XP drivers. I hope ATI is working on this.

Any way.. anyone can help us please!

Got an Athlon 1200 in a KT266a chipset DDR

I have a Soyo Dragon P4X400 Ultra w/ R9700 running XP Corp SP1 and have not experienced this problem with any driver since rev 6166. Installed rev 6200 (7.79b) last night and all is still well.

Do you have an adequate power supply?

Do you have any IRQ conflicts / sharing going on?

Sad

No conflicts in my case.
don't know about the power suply (got 250W), but in Windows 98 everything goes great with any driver (even the first that supported radeon 9000). So I think it's Windows XP problem, or XP Dirvers.
...
