Why FastWrite disabled by cat 5.1 on 9600XT?

Why does 5.1 disable the FastWrite feature on 9600XT cards?

Yea fast writes DEGRADE stability..
Reduce the ability to over clock...
And for many others benchmarks LOWER...
And lower FPS in games....

Fast writes are recommended to be OFF in the 1st place
They were only recommended "on" in a specific case/issue 9600's
But that issue was long fixed... thus they should default off

Fast writes should be enabled in you bios and disabled in windows
via smart gart...I even did an article on this while bac and dozens
of forum member confirmed my results.

I would definately leave fast writes off on the MB as well as any of the drivers,it makes my system unstable otherwise

I have never had serious stability issues with Fastwrites on, some motherboard like my Intel D875PBZ board don't even have an option to turn it off. But it works fine.

here's a new one, i just got my 9600XT AIW, fresh install of 5.1's and fast writes are on by default... check your bios... possibly something switched there

also, the drivers do a automatic test.... it on some combination of machines, disables itself if it see any form of instability

Fastwrites are on in BIOS. I tried what Neon said and noticed no difference. Since I've had no stability problems with them on for the past 6 months, I went ahead and turned them back on. Oh, I should mention i'm back to using 4.12 at the moment. 5.1 still had them disabled for some reason.

Going back to Omega's 4.12 for the fast write option too, my system just isn't as stable without fast write ON. Omega usually gives the option to turn on fast write manually with the warning that it is for AMD 64 and/or 9600 owners, this should be done in the official CATs as well instead of a buggy auto-detection.

Theres zero point to having fast writes set to on in the bios if you are going to then turn them off in windows, since off in the BIOS would also turn it off in windows

@ jasonbourne

If you dont know what you are doing in the BIOS then leave it alone as you can screw up your system

As for explaining your BIOS that all depends what sort of motherboard you have and what type of BIOS it uses

You should have gotten a manual with your PC which explains most of the BIOS in Engrish to some extent

Also use google as there are various guides as to what all the settings in the bios mean

For example

thanks ! i read my motherboard's manual and it doesn't say nothing about fast writes.but the catalyst 5.1 set the fast writes on by default so i'll just leave it like that which is probably the best for my system.

Well the tests I and others ran, sporadic spikes down count when you
average a number of runs having FW on is less stable for everyone hence the
ability to o/c higher with it off. Also with it off higher average FPS.. and more
constant FPS is the result...

a lot of people make the mistake of Turing it off VIA bios which you shouldn’t
do unless they have a specific problem. then you'll see a difference only
because it disables things like side band addressing if you disable FW via the
bios.... which gives a performance hit... it has to be enabled in bios and
disabled in smart gart / windows.

well if you wer o/cing many people get a little higher o/c out of their card if
they turn it off. Some system are even totally unstable with fast writes
on....It's a nvidia agp standard. I don't think anyone really benefits from it's
just another obsolete AGP setting...

fast writes used to make a about 50-100 3dmark2001 difference back in the
day.. when a 650mhz duron with sdram and a original radeon 64 mb vivo and
it's two pixel pipes and dx7 support... (when such a system was considered a high end gameing machine)

but since then it's just plagued user with issues... Omega turned them off
ages ago when the bulks of users e-mail to him having trouble, the issues
being the result of having FW on...

if you are not having any problem... leave it be. It best not to "fix" something that isn't broken

I have no plans to disable FW on my 9600XT AIW as it running stable and fast. IF i end up with some weird freezes, crashes or other problems that could be directly related to my 9600xt, i'll think about disabling it.
