ATI Video Card/Driver problem
Hello everyone!
I recently tried to update my display drivers, and it lead to a pretty big problem: After installing ATI drivers (or Omega Drivers, I tried those as well) my computer wants to boot. After this it works about 1-10 minutes before crashing. The crashes occur while surfing on the net, or doing something similar. I can play games for hours, but after trying to surf the net or browse my computer, it crashes. It does nothing after the crashes, so the only option is to restart After booting it used to freeze on the XP menu where I am supposed to choose a user account, and after a while it leads to a blue screen displaying a message which says something like the following: The driver ati2dvag for the display device got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates. I got the blue screen phase off by logging to safe-mode, and by getting a new driver via system options. But my computer still crashes every 2-13 minutes. System Retrieveing also doesn't work. My system is as following OS: Windows XP Pro Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Video Card: ATI Radeon 9600 XT (about 98% sure about the XT) 512Mb RAM Any helps is appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Remove drivers and use Drivercleaner in safe mode to clear any bits of old drivers, and re-install using freshly downloaded drivers.
System Restore should get you back to before you installed the drivers, unless you have it turned of. |

I tried it, and it didn't help. And when I tried to restore my system, every system restore point was gone. What should I do now?

When you install Omegas, have you tried leaving fast writes to on/off? 9600 series has some issues with them being on, and recommended value is off. There is little to non performance loss. So try that.
Infinite loop means there is something wrokng with the driver. My suggestion - completely disable system restore, and enable it after you succeed with installation. Video driver rollback through system restore is a problem in itself (rarely works)

this sounds like virus activity to me, the virus is stopping him from doing most things but he can do all offline things... Just my two cent
![]() Try downloading an antivirus program (such as Zonealarm, AVG etc.) and install it, you may have to download it on another computer and disc it, or put it on a flash drive or something Hope this helps dude, doesn't seem like a graphics problem at all

I have Norton AntiVirus Pro 2004. I'll run virus scan in a moment, but I doubt it's a virus since the problem allways occurs after installing drivers. I'm gonna try the fastwrite thing though. Thanks for the help.

Bump!
Quote:
I installed the Omega Drivers again, turned fastwrites on, and it's 5 minutes without crashing. Also, it looks like almost every time the crashes occur, I'm surfing the web with Mozilla, or Opera (the only browsers that I use). Edit: On the side note, things look a bit laggy now. Edit2: I changed the refresh rate to 85hz, and I still see some traces of lagging, but I would consider it ok now. Millions of thanks go to everyone who helped me!
