Default Post Welcome

Welcome to the club filled with people getting booted out of D3D games, and having the infamous 'stutter' problem. I think I'm going to register at Rage3D forums and create a thread to see if all of us having these problems can find commonalities that may be causing these errors that apparently a number of users DO NOT experience.

jjmd,

I have a Dragon P4X400 Ultra and would like to make a few comments on how I got my setup to run w/o problems.

First, I was having serious issues with the ATI drivers rev 6193 and my R9700. Once I dropped back to rev 6166 (using 6166 Plutoniums now), all my problems went away. By problems, I mean D3D games freezing the system, unable to bench with 3DMark, unexplained reboots, etc.

Also, I installed the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers. The beta 4.41 drivers also worked for me.

EDIT: I have found that the VIA 4.41 drivers give me the fastest performance so far. My Sandra Unbuffered mem results are 1527/1548 and 13709 3D Marks. All at stock speeds, no overclocking.

Once I did the above, everything's been running as stable as can be.

When you say "besides it not reading it as an 8x card", what were you using to determine this? I do know a few of the benching / sys info utilities do not support 8x AGP yet, and they will report as 2x or 4x.

I think that WCPUID and newest SiSoft Sandra can read AGP 8x.

I'm using an Audigy Gamer, soon to be swapped with an Audigy 2 card. Haven't had a problem yet.

Also, RIV@NVX is right when he said that WCPUID can detect and display AGP 8x capabilities. However, the version of Sandra that I'm running does not (v2002.1.8.59).

One last thought... Are you using the latest bios (not the overclocked one) on your mobo?

The 9700 is a great card. Let's hope you can make your box stable so you can enjoy it!

GL!

Default Post still nothing works thanks guys so far for trying

Well i have tried all the bios up grades even the over clocking bios "2aa1, 2aa2, 2aa3,and the over clocking one" still nothing. I have tried all the updated drivers 2 , the plutoniums, the 6-13-10-6166, 6178, 6193, and the 7.77r300, i have tried all the via 4 in 1 , 430b2, 443v, 443v(a), 2v247, v441 . I im ready to pull my hair out, wait i have allready started. I have called ati and soyo they both tell me the same thing wait till the drivers mature, yeah by that time the card will be out dated and will have moved on to bigger and better. Man i hate ATI when they do this crap, release some thing when its drivers are not all complete, its just like BILL GATES and his wonder full operating systems LOL. I live in Las Vegas and when i call ATI in canada which they have no 800 # for support, it cost me 22 cents a minute long distance and i have now talked to them for over 3 hours, this card is now costing me money!!!!!! What really gets me is that http://www.newegg.com who i buy my stuff from wont give me back my money because they will only replace the card with the same card and same goes for the Soyo SY-KT 400 Dragon Ultra MOB so i cant even replace the mob with the gigabyte or what not or the video card for the Gainwood Ti4600. Man this really bits im so mad im ready to drive to california where newegg.com is and shove this card and mob up there ass. What great costomer service they have. So please please guys if any one of you have got this working with the Soyo kt 400 dragon ultra, xp 2000 AMD, Ati 9700 pro and Cosair 512 mb mem DDR 2700 pleace tell how u did it. Thanks guys. and if anybody knows how i can get http://www.newegg.com to take this shit back please tell me. Thanks Guys for reading.....

OK, maybe it's not a software issue, but a hardware problem. Starting with the obvious, do you have an adequate power supply? I've heard that under-powered (less than 300 watt) and no name power supplies can also cause instability. A good quality power supply with a moderate wattage is better than a no-name super-watt one.

What are you running your memory at? I found 333DDR to be the most stable. While I can run at 400DDR, I've experienced unexplained lockups and/or reboots (plus my system benches faster at 333 than 400). What do you have set for your memory timings?

Do you have adequate memory to be running at those speeds and/or timings?

To see if it's a conflict with other hardware in your system, pull everything but the 9700 and see what happens (also try disabling all onboard mobo hardware). If things work, start by putting your cards back in one by one, testing after each card has be placed back into your box.

It might be helpful if you post your complete system specs (including hardware, bios settings if they are relevant -- timings, any OC'ing, what's enabled and disabled for onboard hardware, etc.).

I'm sure I'll think of some other things later, and I'll post my suggestions here.

BTW, most of the suggestions above are relayed from the asusboards.com forums as I started with an Asus P4S8X and had no end of troubles.

Keep us updated on your progress.

[EDIT:]

I should have read your entire post...

Newegg has a 30 day refund policy on most hardware (return for refund or exchange of other product). I did notice that some of their hardware states "exchange for same item only", though. I returned 2 Asus P4S8X mobos and an Asus P4PE to Newegg before finally settling on 2 Soyo Dragons.

[/EDIT]

Go do some googling on your motherboard before you buy one.

Some people have nothing but issues with Soyo's dragon line of boards...

i have a friend, who we fixed all his computer problems, buy buying an MSI KT333 Ultra motherboard... simply put, his soyo refused to work properly unless you used *NO* extra peripherals... only the onboard stuff and video card. EXACT same symptoms as you.

Anyway, he sold his board for a decent price. That's a little harsh, but that would be my suggestion. The other solutions I've heard for that board are a little outrageous like getting an excess of 500w PSU and other things like that

replace with another board, and I bet you won't have any more problems with anything :P

Default Post Nato u were right!!!!!!!

Well i found out what the problem /problems were. Thanks to Nato saying the soyo dragon ultra board doesn't like any other cards in it besides the agp is totally right. I took the sound card out and the video. I jump the cmos for 1 min then put it back then installed the ati 9700 pro card and left the sound blaster live platnium card out . Fired it up reset the bios and booted in to xp pro. Ran 3dmark 2001 se. It worked all the way to the end of the Nature bench then crashed. so i uncecked the nature bench and left every thing else the same. For some reason it dose not like the nature bench " do u guys have the same problem or do i have a bad copy of 3d mark 2001 se" ???? but i ran it with the rest of the benches and got a score of 11214 i dont know if the score is less or higher with out the nature bench but that score ant bad i thought considering im still running defaults in the ati setup. I do have the plutonium drivers running are they good drivers or should i get some better ones for speed. I shouldn't complain as now i atleast can run my new card. Soyo or Ati more that likly Soyo is crazy by not letting you run any pci cards with the 9700 pro so i guess i will be useing the on board sound till better drivers or a fix comes along. Now for the other problem i cant oc my soyo boards front side bus because the ati card dose not like any thing over 66mhz and when i up the front side buss the agp buss goes up to and then the card crashes again. So i uped the buss to 166 and turned the multiplyer down to 11.5 for a total of 1909 and turn the cpu to pci divider to 5 so i could over clock and keep the agp buss at 66 mhz that was the only way i could over clock and keep the ati card working what a joke!!!! so the next step will be bumping up to a 12 or maybe 12.5 multiplyer for more top end 12 @ 166 for 1992 and maybe 12.5 @ 166 for 2075 as my temps right now are only 45C and board temps at 98 deg.

I hate having to under clock the multipler just to bump the front side buss way up but owell what else can i do. So please guys give me some ideas as to what drives to use and the setting u guys are using with the card in advanced settings ie open gl and direct 3d and what drivers u found to work for u. by the way what scores are u guys getting. Thanks Nato and bcurtis.

I have that MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU, it is really an excellent board. I heard that their KT4 series doesn't have the famous 8x agp bug in some cases.

Do enough Googling and you'll find problems with every piece of hardware out there.

However, I have to disagree with your statement about Soyo's Dragon line. As mentioned before, I have a P4X400 Dragon Ultra Platinum, and it was the first board to run my memory at 333DDR (also does 400) and my Radeon 9700 without ongoing problems. I haven't had a lockup, reboot, stutter or any other problem since installing my Dragon Ultra and removing beta video drivers.

I purchased the P4X400 after pulling my hair out with two Asus P4S8Xs and a DOA P4PE.

jjmd, it sounds like your problem is either a bad peripheral card, or an IRQ conflict. Use the guide in your manul to install your addon cards into slots that don't share IRQs with each other. For me, it's the 9700 in the AGP slot, NIC in PCI slot 3, SB Audigy 2 in slot 4. Onboard sound and NIC are disabled. Absolutely no problems here.

hey

im running a setup almost identical to that.

here it is

amd athlon xp 2200+
soyo dragon ultra plat. kt400
built by ati radeon 9700 pro
corsair pc2700xms c2 (ddr333mhz)
wd1000jb western digital special editon w/8mb buffer (no raid)
soundblaster live 5.1
turbolink 420w dual fan/psu (need a quality one, i know)
chieftec server case with beaucoup fans.

okay. here goes.

when i first got the card i had a lot of problems running the cd drivers for the rad 9700 pro. i kept trying the new drivers and kept having problems. eventually when the 6178's came out and then later the 6193's my problems ceased. however 6178 was very close to soyo's third bios update and i installed them near the same time.

so basically my lockups were minimal. when i had that all cleared out, i formatted the hard drive and reinstalled windows xp pro (corp) then installed sp1. then via 4in1's 4.43. then i installed the 6193's and everything was good to go. sound card was picked up by winxp so i didn't install any proprietary drivers for it or anything. good luck on figuring this out.

my only changes in the bios are as follows. agp voltage bumped up to 1.6 (helps stability), ram settings, and the dbi out config in the agp section. it is the last option and appears in the agp bus 2x, 4x slot if you have an 8x card installed. set it to enabled. also ati's drivers will only show agp @2x. use 3dmark2k1 to show the correct display of 8x. also i set my agp buffer to 64mb.

The latest leak (rev 6200 - 7.79b) does correctly show AGP 8x in SMARTGART if it's enabled. At least for me anyway.
