Overdriving TFT's max. resolution with Omega-Drivers!? Help!
Hello!
For about one month now, Im trying to get my new 23" LG L2320A TFT to work with my Ati Radeon Pro 9600. The maximum resolution of the display is 1920 x 1200 and theres no problem running it on D-Sub. Unfortunately the same resolution over Digital-DVI is not possible, because my computer finds just a 1280x1024 TFT based on the data provided with the DDC-Signal. Now, if I use a resolution higher than 1280x1024 it is just 1280x1024 with fit to screen and scrolling ability. Changing the monitordrivers doesnt have any effects, cause the DDC-Signal is hardware-based. But today I've found out, that it is possible to have a real output-resolution of max. 1520 x 1140 with the newest Omega ATI drivers! After reading the update-changes I know, that this is the highest resolution, of the new customized ones in the Omega-Driver. In my oppinion, these new customized resolutions added by Omega, override the DDC-max-resolution-detection and work, independent of the detected TFT-Displays max resolution. So would it be possible to solve my problem, in adding 1920x1200 pixels as a customized resolution in the omega-driver, or does anyone know another solution!? Regards, MistaMinista |

What happens when you turn off "Use DDC information"? (monitor properties)

Unfortunately, the ATI and the Omega Ati drivers dont allow to turn off DDC on a Flat Panel Display connected over DVI.
I think the custom resolutions are the right way, but I dont know how I can add more of those like 1600x1200 and 1920x1200 in the driver. Ive found these lines in the Omega driver: ... ;--== New Video Modes Added ==-- ; New Modes @ 60Hz (For CRT & FPD) ... HKR,, DALDTMCRTBCD1520x1140x0x60, %REG_BINARY%, 00,00,00,00,00,00,20,48,00,00,15,20,00,00,16,24,00 ,00,01,60,00,00,11,80,00,00,11,40,00,00,11,41,00,0 0,00,03,00,01,45,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00, 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,a4 ,eb HKR,, DALDTMDFPBCD1520x1140x0x60, %REG_BINARY%, 00,00,00,00,00,00,20,48,00,00,15,20,00,00,16,24,00 ,00,01,60,00,00,11,80,00,00,11,40,00,00,11,41,00,0 0,00,03,00,01,45,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00, 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,a4 ,eb ... 1520x1140 is the highest resolution I can set without screen-scrolling now, although it still detects a 1280x1024 DDC Display and there are no problems using it. |

Are you using a Dual-Link DVI cable? This may be what's holding you from getting it to be detected, since at those resolutions DVI is close to filling single-link cable bandwidth.
Also, get Powerstrip, it can add custom resolutions with minimal pain and having to edit registry.

Yes, I use a Dual-Link Cable and the newest PowerStrip.
But even Powerstrip is bound to the ATI driver, and cant do resolutions beyond the DDC Signal, if the driver doesnt allow it. In my oppinion, the only way is to change something in the omega driver, like I mentioned in my first post, or as a last solution, to try a nVidia card, but I dont think there'd be a difference. Perhaps there is still anonther way, like turning off DDC completely, but that doesnt work without hacking into the drivers, because the "Dont use DDC" option isnt shown when using a display over digital output... Does anyone know, if there exists any old ATI driver for 9600 Pro, that didnt look at displays max. resolution over DVI ?? |

Have you checked with LG for driver update? quite often the resolutions are hard coded into the monitor driver, and unless you have a special driver, you won't be able to select it. With my NEC 1735NXM (1280 native) I can select resolutions up to 2048x1536, which would make it "scrollable" (as expected). However, NEC provides 2 different drivers, one is NEC-Analog and another is NEC-Digital.
EDIT: Just checked the LG driver, and it looks like it has support for 1920x1200 (from the .inf file) [1920] HKR,,MaxResolution,,"1920,1200" Here is what seems you may have to change: [L2320A_Analog.AddReg] HKR,"MODES\1920,1200",Mode1,,"30.0-96.0,56.0-85.0,+,+" HKR,,ICMprofile,0,"LGL2320A.ICM" [L2320A_DVI-I.AddReg] HKR,"MODES\1600,1200",Mode1,,"30.0-80.0,56.0-85.0,+,+" HKR,,ICMprofile,0,"LGL2320A.ICM" [L2320A_DVI-D.AddReg] HKR,"MODES\1280,1024",Mode1,,"30.0-71.0,56.0-85.0,+,+" HKR,,ICMprofile,0,"LGL2320A.ICM" Change it to [L2320A_Analog.AddReg] HKR,"MODES\1920,1200",Mode1,,"30.0-96.0,56.0-85.0,+,+" HKR,,ICMprofile,0,"LGL2320A.ICM" [L2320A_DVI-I.AddReg] HKR,"MODES\1600,1200",Mode1,,"30.0-80.0,56.0-85.0,+,+" HKR,,ICMprofile,0,"LGL2320A.ICM" [L2320A_DVI-D.AddReg] HKR,"MODES\1920,1200",Mode1,,"30.0-96.0,56.0-85.0,+,+" HKR,,ICMprofile,0,"LGL2320A.ICM" Note, that this is somewhat a guess on my side, but I am pretty sure it should work. After looking into it a little more, you may need to change this as well: [L2320A_DVI-D.Install] DelReg=DEL_CURRENT_REG AddReg=L2320A_DVI-D.AddReg,1280,DPMS CopyFiles=L2320A_DVI-D.CopyFiles to [L2320A_DVI-D.Install] DelReg=DEL_CURRENT_REG AddReg=L2320A_DVI-D.AddReg,1920,DPMS CopyFiles=L2320A_DVI-D.CopyFiles Of course, the above is true only if you are using DVI-D cable, and not DVI-I. but since you are limited to 1280 (default for DVI-D in this case) this is what I am guessing you are using.

Another thing, I just checked the official manual for you, and it seems like the official Max for DVI-D is 1280x1024@60, which is strange to say the least, since DVI-D is a much better input for LCD panels than DVI-I or D-Sub, and it should have no problem running it you would think. So be careful with the driver hack.

@redsolar:
Thanks for your work, but "hacking" the monitor driver was the first thing I tried. It has only effect on the resolutions you can choose, but none on the real output-res. Heres what Ive tried: My TFT is connected to DVI-I over a DVI-I cable (dont ask me why the DDC signal says 1280x1024 instead of 1600x1200). With the standard driver from LG I could choose up to 1600x1200, but it was always put down to 1280x1024 with scrolling. After I hacked it to 1920x1200 I could also choose this as resolution, but it was put down to 1280x1024 w.s. again. So the thing is, if you connect something over DVI, the graphic card asks the monitor driver what max resolution you may choose, but for some reason (maybe the card dont believe it ;-) the real max. resolution that will be output is based on the DDC-Data. Because of this, the only possibilities would be, either to change the graphic drivers or to change graphiccard and/or display. And believe me, my monitor would easily accept 1920x1200 (also over DVI) if that annoying ATI-Card would make it!! |

When you say it will easily accept 1920 over DVI, have you had success with something other than the card you are trying it on right now? From what I saw so far, this is all LG supports over DVI-D (1280) and DVI-I (1600), and the only official 1920 support goes over Analog only (or HD input).
It still puzzles me as to why LG set this strange limit for DVI ...
