driver installation issues...a lot of em!

I just got a Sager 9860 with an mrx800 a couple weeks ago and have spent several days trying to get the omega and or catalyst drivers installed. I know for a fact that other 9860 owners have installed both of these drivers. I've read several threads on this board mentioning some of the issues that I'm going to mention, but haven't read a 100% sure solution. Also I don't think anyone has had ALL of these issues at the same time. I hope you all have some suggestions. All in all, I've probably tried 10-12 times to get these installed correctly.

First I just went in and uninstalled the original driver (6.14.10.6497, including the control panel). Restarted. Then installed the omega drivers (4.12, I haven't tried with the newest). Restarted. Went into display properties>settings>advanced and tried to click on the omega tab. Got this error:

"C:\windows\system32\shell32.dll,control_rundl l
"c:\windows\sustem32\desk.cpl", disply"

And the display properties crashed. So I removed everything omega and retried. A couple times. Same error. So once again I removed everything omega and ran driver and cab cleaner to get rid of all things ati. Installed the omegas again. Got the same error as before. A couple times on the reinstall of the omegas I also seemingly got them installed, but when I clicked on the omega tab it only had 2 of the 5 tabs inside. This seemed to me to be a conflict with ATI's control panel...but I am sure that I uninstalled the ATI control panel. I removed the omegas, went back to the original drivers and then tried to install the cat 5.1 drivers (the cp version) to see if I could at least get those to work. When running the installer I got this error:

"Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration. Please make sure you have the rquired hardware or software."

I followed ATI's instructions to the letter, even going into the registry and deleting anything having to do with ATI. I removed everything and now I'm back to the original drivers that came with the machine.

I feel like I've followed all instructions carefully, but obviously have nothing to show for it. I'm ready to do a fresh system install and start from there, but I was hoping that someone could maybe suggest some genious solution that'll make it unneccesary. I come primarily from an apple background, but I thought I knew my way around windows reasonably well. Its become blatantly apparant that I don't. Hope someone can help me out with that.

To clear up any confusion I had to look it up to figure out what he was talking about for others he's talking about a "Sager 9860" laptop with a mobile radeon X800

You should try the latest drivers insted of older ones like 4.12, 5.1 is out and 5.2 omega should be out some time soon... there are some other modded sets you can try, as well as well...

Also, you can't install / run CCC with out the supporting drivers and .net 1.1 or 2.0 installed

Have you tried Mobility Modder yet? You have to patch ATI's official drivers prior to being able to use them with mobility cards. Otherwise you have to use Sager-provided drivers. I am not 100% sure Omega sets support x800 mobility yet.

I assumed people would know that Sager is a laptop manufacturer or at least that the mrx800 was the newest mobile radeon. Sorry for the lack of specificity.

I know, but I haven't tried to install CCC. I may try the 5.2 omegas but I'd be a little surprised if they worked when everything else won't.

I saw the thread on mobility modder just after I posted this thread and read up on it. As of yet it does not support the x800 (the card was only just released). Omega drivers are supposed to support all radeon mobility cards (m6 and up) and I've read of users of the same notebook using the omega 4.12's and the cat 5.1's. I will however post another thread at notebookforums to see if the people who've used the cat 5.1's are using mobility modder.
