I would like to know what you guys recommend would be the best driver for overall performance on most new games.

System Specs:
AMD Athlon XP 2500+
ABIT NF7-S v2 (using onboard sound)
Samsung 1024mb DDR RAM
Sapphire Radeon 9800Pro 128MB

I haven't had any problems with any drivers ever, but try the Unians or Omegas.

Performance is ok on every driver - but i can't understand why ATI have much problems with keeping refresh, DDC and gamma information

NEVER had a problem with ANY drivers from ATI. It's weird seeing all these people with funky errors.

For me its definitely the 5.2's. FarCry performance is way up on these, apparently there was some type of performance improvements across the board in the vertex shader engine in this driver release for all x700 & x8x0's which is pretty nice FarCry was one of the games in reviews where the x700 lacked the performance the 6600 had, now it appears to no longer be an issue thankfully. Im alot happier with my x700 now than I was before.

4.12, deffo, they are the best ATI has ever done, clean graphics, excellent speed (best yet in 3d mark), and all games run problem free.

Why dont you redo this post as a poll, should be intresting.

What it is about video drivers that convinces people that they need to be chosen like you choose an entree at a restraunt? The attitude seems to be that just like a menu item, a driver may or may not be appropriate to your individual needs. Each driver set has its own unique taste, smell, price and size. One must research and mull over the performance, image quality and stability of all available revisions before an upgrade is done or a new install is made. Drivers have personalitys after all, right?

Don't get me wrong; experimenting with various driver sets can be fun and interesting. But don't lose yourself in the game and start to imagine noticeable performance or image quality differences in various sets regardless of benchmark results that come up the same every time. There are exceptions to this of course, but it's rarely anything worth the effort. My advice is to always use the newest official set available. If you have a problem with a game that you play, research it and use an older set if necessary. Follow this simple rule and you'll never have to post a thread like the one linked above.
