Problems with ATI Radeon 9600xt - need help!!!!

I just bought a PowerColor Radeon 9600xt off of newegg.com and the cards works and everything but the performance sucks. For example: My two previous cards Geforce fx 5600 and Geforce mx420 both ran quake2 at well over 170fps. After installing the ATI card i now can barely squeeze out 50fps...it fluctuates from 30 to 50....

ive tried reinstalling the ATI 5.3 drivers and I even tried the Omega drivers...same result...hardware problem or software. (software pleeeeez!!!!).

If any one can help or knows of this problem id appreciate it

My computer spec's are
Asus A7V880 MB
Athlon XP 2700
ATI Radeon 9600xt
512mb PC3200 DDR
Windows XP SP2

Did you use drivercleaner to get rid of the old Nvidia drivers? If not might be a driver conflict.

Well you just so happen to be in exactly the right place to get driver cleaner. It can be found right here on this site. The address is http://www.drivercleaner.net/ . Use it to get rid of the old Nvidia and ATI drivers. Then you can do a complete reinstall of the ATI drivers. DO it in this order. Install driver cleaner and update it via live update. Delete all the old Nvidia drivers and ATI drivers. Then reboot into safe mode and use driver cleaner to get rid of the drivers. Reboot into normal windows and reinstall.

You realise to use the CCC pack / Control panel you need .net 1.1 or 2.0 beta.
Go to windows update. Select custom, select optional companets, and .NET 1.1
then after you've installed it, run windows update again and install the critical update .NET 1.1 SP1

Other wise you can use the classic control panel version....

Also make sure you've installed the latest chipset drivers
http://www.viaarena.com/downloads/dr...n1_v455vp1.zip

Make sure you've updated to the latest bios A7V880 Release BIOS 1009 3/14/2005

Did you install CCC or non CCC (Catalyst Control Center)? I had a problem where I installed a CCC version while I didn't have Microsoft Net Framework installed and all hell broke loose. Are you sure you did a complete reformat, reinstall the 5.3 drivers, and you still didn't get a performance improvement??? Since your motherboard has a VIA chipset there might be some errors between the AGP and the PCI slot. Try moving your pci cards one slot or as far as possible from the AGP slot. I heard of a problem of the AGP and the PCI slots conflicting on VIA's shitty chipsets while digging around for the answers of the numerous errors I got from their unstable products.

Im wondering if its a case of V-synch being on? from your first post you mentioned getting 107fps(sounds like V-synch off)

ok i have a new problem with the card...while in the game...(quake 2; halfhlife2) the computer will freeze and shut off (not normal windows shutdown) i know have the new CAT 5.4 drivers...the same error occurred with the 5.3 drivers and the Omega Drivers....i got a windows error reporting log

Windows Error Reporting Log:

Error message: STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER

<H2 class=subTitle><H2 class=subTitle><H2 class=subTitle>SYMPTOMS

You may receive one of the following Stop error messages: STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER
STOP: 0x100000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M

</H2>CAUSE

This issue may occur if the display driver is caught in an infinite loop while it waits for the video hardware to become idle. This issue typically indicates a problem with the video hardware or that the display driver cannot program the hardware correctly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, obtain and install the most current driver for your video adapter, or replace your video card.
