I wrote a "ticket" at the ATI support site. Maybe it's a good idea when all other users with these problem will write a ticket too.

I am very dissapointed because ATI fixed the KOTOR 2 bug with low framerates in the Catalyst 5.4. Now I'll have to wait 'till May to play KOTOR 2 again.
NO, you do NOT have to wait until May.

Simply run the 5.4 installer (with catalyst --any previous version-- fully installed), when the splash screen appears (after you tell it where to extract the drivers), immediately go to the ATI folder, find the 2k/xp inf/driver folder/bwhatever its called. look for the 2 driver compressed files atioglxx.dl_ and ati3duag.dl_, then, cut and paste them to a new folder where you won't lose them. Then, open a command DOS Prompt to that folder, and type in: "Expand ati3duag.dl_ ati3duag_catalyst_54.dll " and expand atioglxx.dl_ atioglxx_catalyst_54.dll

while you're at it, go to windows/system32, find the current atioglxx and ati3duag.dll files, copy (Do NOT cut, just copy) both of Them, also, to your new folder you made, and rename them to atioglxx_catalyst_(currentversionnumber).dll ,and ati3duag_catalyst_(currentversionnumber).dll
Once that's done, then cancel the driver installation.

Then, find out of KOTOR2 uses d3d or openGL (i don't know what it uses). If it uses openGL, copy the openGL file you just made, into the game's EXE folder, and rename it to atioglxx.dll.

If the game uses direct3D, it's harder; you will need to boot to windows safe mode.
Then, in safe mode, do the following:
1) go to windows/system32 and delete the current ati3duag.dll (you did back it up, didn't you?).
2) Go to your new folder, copy the 5.4 direct3d file, into windows/system32, then rename it there, as ati3duag.dll
3) Reboot.

Enjoy playing KOTOR2 bugfixed.

Thank you. I'am already using the new OpenGL driver in my KOTOR 2 folder. It works fine. No more framerate drops. I'm also thinking that the image quality is better than before. But I'm not sure about this.

Thank you all for your help!

Update: My contact at Sapphire tried to reproduce the problem on a variety of his boards and can not see the problem. His stuff works fine.

So question to the guys with the problem. is there some other data you arent telling us? Maybe you did something silly like flash your BIOS or something like that?

For my problem this is easy to answer. I never flashed a BIOS of a graphiccard in my whole life. My X800 XT PE is completly untouched. No overclocking, nothing. I have a Dell Dimension 8300, so I can't overclock CPU or motherboard too.

Let me chime in. I had problems with the 5.4s until I used driver cleaner. Now after the successful install of the 5.4s, I too had the 4 Bit color desktop, but it corrected itself before boot up was complete.

I only saw this happen once before, when I tried to uninstall Radlinker. After uninstall, the system booted up to 4 Bit and stayed. Only a Restore in Safemode corrected it. Does anyone having this problem have Radlinker installed? Maybe there is a conflict with the 5.4s. I still see 4 Bit color once in a while, when I Boot Up sometimes, but it always corrects itself.

I did some tests with the .dll files of the new drivers. All new .dll files work fine if I change them manually via windows safe mode. But the IMHO 2D-driver, the display driver won't work. When I copy the new ati2dvag.dll of the 5.4 drivers in my system32 folder Windows starts in the 4-bit mode and the control panel shows a warning that there is no or a corrupt driver.

I have no problems when I overwrite just the new Direct3D driver. I could use the option "Hardware Shadow Mapping" in the "Splinter Cell Chaos Theory" settings. These option was unavailble for me with the Catalyst 5.3 Direct 3D driver.

So it's the ati2dvag in the 5.4s causing the 4 bit bootup? If we replace this file, with the one from the 5.3s, no more 4 bit bootup?? Will this effect any gaming if this file is replaced. Is the ati2dvag solely for 2D (desktop)? Thanks for testing!

Bad news: I installed Catalyst 5.4, replaced the new ati2dvag.dll with the old one from Cat. 5.3 but Windows started in 4-Bit mode again. There is more than just the ati2dvag.dll. Sorry. All I can say is that if you want to use fixes for Direct 3D or OpenGL games than try to use the two .dll-files of the new Catalyst. Copy the new atioglxx.dll and the new ati3duag.dll in your system32 folder in windows safe mode and you'll get all the new bug fixes of Catalyst 5.4 regarding 3D gaming. Maybe this will work on other systems too. Be sure to make a backup of your system files.

You seem to be right. I didn't have that option available using the 5.4+CCC drivers, but I reinstalled using the 5.4 without CCC, and I can enable "Hardware Shadow Mapping" in SC3:CT.

On the other hand, the disabled option for doing HDR is no longer around after doing the switch.

System Specs

also to chime in here, i installed the 5.4's about 2 days before i borrowed a HDD, the first time i booted up after installing the drivers, on both HDD's, i got the 4bit boot and then a temporary system lockup. after that my system would reboot and the problem went away.

i'm also using a sapphire, but it's a x850xt rather than a x800 series. also, after that first bootup i haven't had the problem again.

I have a PowerColor X800 XT.

I re-installed Windows. Restored default settings in BIOS. But still came up with marvelous 4 bit colors!

This is the first problem I ever have with the Catalyst drivers.

Negative, I'm not a great believer in messing with things that are already as powerful as an X800... my card was purchased brand new 3 months ago and I haven't even gone as far as to install a third-party driver never mind mess around with things like the BIOS. This card is as 'default' as it could be.

i have the same problem, 4 bit and 640x480 (unable to make any changes) i am almost certain that this is a driver and card conflict somewhere. as you can see i have a x800 sapphire pro as well.

Thumbs Down! Same Problem with x800 pro

I've got a Sapphire Toxic X800Pro. I HAVE updated the BIOS and messed with the clocks, but lots of Catalyst drivers up to 5.3 have worked just fine. I'm not messing with my card until someone proves that it's the BIOS. It sounds like some unmodded cards are having trouble with the 5.4 drivers too.

I get that same 4-bit color mode and it can't be changed. An error message saying there is no driver pops up.
