mat_dxlevel 91 = Support for HDR, Parallaxmapping, etc as far as I can tell, we've worked with both and 91 is available, ie same performance and quality as 9, without more support hard exactly to know, contact valve
Thanks for the info.

A question and a observation, though. First off, Can you clarify for me a bit more about what r_Shadowrendertotexture does in-game?

Second, concerning the mat_dxlevel 91..........I have a 9700 Pro, I should mention first. What happens when I add this command into my autoexec.cfg is always the same. It resets my settings in the Advanced Video settings tab (where the anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering options are) to the recommended default values the game initially detects for you. It also resets the game back to mat_dxlevel 90, it will never stay on 91.

This leads me to conjecture that the dxlevel 91 is apparently only available on the newer ATI GPUs after the R300 and R350 chips, perhaps? In any case, what this means is that as long as people have mat_dxlevel 91 in their autoexec.cfg with at least my video card, it will keep resetting the in-game graphics options to their detected recommended setting for the game......which I'm sure would irritate people who set their settings differently from that (probably most of us).

Oh and btw, so if mat_parallaxmap will become functional after the Lost Coast is released, does that mean it has something to do with the HDR lighting?

Parallaxmapping = Cheap Displacement mapping

I've not noticed that problem with the mat_dxlevel overwriting your previously chosen settings, I'll look into it some more..... thanks!

rendering shadows is ridiculously expensive on most hardware, thus although it doesn't look quite as well theoretically, we instead are telling the engine to "fake" shadows by placing a shadow texture on a plane where it should be, at least this is our best estimated guess, please don't take anything I'm saying here as the word of God as I have no inside line to valve or anything so I do the best with what I can find....

Alright, cool, good to know. And I'm glad I asked, cause that wasn't what I thought it did at all.

Well good news and bad news, we're not happy enough with the current state of the 5.5's to release anything, the sets not bad, actually it's quite good, just not spit shined and finished, and the 5.6's are right around the corner hopefully. So we'll for sure have a 5.6 set out for you and hopefully not too long after the original release of the 5.6's, don't ask me what not too long means either or I'll give you the "When it's done"
