DVi Issues with x800 XL - wont boot
I just bought an x800 XL to replace my aging 9700 pro and everything seemed fine the first day, installed the latest Cats from Ati web site and got stuck into some Half Life 2 on my regular VGA flat panel monitor with it mirrored on my DLP projector which is plugged in to the DV-i port with a DV-i cable.
Then something changed. Now whenever I try and boot the computer I get no signal to either the VGA monitor or the DVi Projector when they are both plugged in and the computer just hangs, doesn't even make it to bios. If I unplug the DVi cable everything works fine. After booting into windows I can plug the DVi back in and get it working but the card automatically gives all priority to the DVi device letting it govern what resolutions are available in clone mode even though I had my VGA monitor set as primary. I want my Dv-i to clone the VGA governred settings, not the other way around. So it seems that whenever the DVi is plugged in, the card is deciding at a firmware or a hardware level that DVi gets priority and yet isn't communicating properly and managing to sync with the device on boot causing the card to transmit a signal that is out of range for both the projector and monitor. Any suggestions on how to fix this? |

I've been seeing problems which sound similiar to this one; I've been getting "blank screen with no signal" when I switched between displays on a dual-headed display. If I just have the CRT connected, things seem to be fine, but I've also noticed that having a LCD connected seems to affect what modes and resolutions the CRT is willing to display, even when I am using the CRT alone...

Welcome to the forums
This is quite interesting, since VGA port should be given preference over DVI if there is a device attached to it on boot. It sounds like your best choice is to stick with unplugged DVI cable and plug it in when necessary only. There may be a compatibility issue. If you have a chance to try a different DVI cable, I would try that as well, just to eliminate a faulty cable problem.

Managed to sort it out in the end by clearing the CMOS on the mobo - seems something must have gotten 'stuck' in the card settings and bios - any hoooo, that did the trick and the card isplaying much nicer now.
