Resolutions disappearing in games with Cat 5.4???

Installed my shiney new x800 XL over the weekend and I am very happy with the card and it's performance but I have noticed that a lot of resolutions are not showing in my game options that were ther with my 9700pro.

Half Life 2 is best example only offering up to 1024x768 for 4:3 ratios and a meager 854x480 for the 16:9 ratios.

I have a flat panel connected to the VGA which supports up to 1280x1024 75mhz 4:3 and a DLP digital projector (you gotta see HL2 at 92" ) connected to the DVi which supports up to 1080i or 720p 16:9 resolutions.

Any suggestions?

All my resolutions seem to be there on my X800XL (PCIE), however I can't add the custom resolutions I had before with my 9800 Pro (AGP). I could really use a fix for this, as I'm really dependant on my custom resolutions.

You should be able to use PowerStrip to add custom resolutions. It's shareware, but does not require you to register or anything, just nags you here and there.

tamed_g, it sounds like something is improperly reporting supported refresh rates. Are all the monitor/projector drivers (if any) installed? How are the devices reported? Default Monitor?

All devices are reporting properly.

Last night I figured out that the list for 'supported modes' was very small in Windows and it seems that this is the lilst that the games check when offering resolutions. I can access all resolutions if I turn off the 'hide unsupported modes' checkbox in Windows and they workd fine all the way up to 1900x1200, but it still doesn't help in the games.

Is there any way I can manually edit the 'supported modes' list to add some of the other resolutions I want to use so the games will see them as available?

I have a full version of powerstrip, but I dont actually need to add resolutions, just make them all register as supported. Seems my BENQ5120 Projector and the x800XL aren't talking to each other properly.

I'll check the monitor drivers tonight - what do I do if they are showing as generic? I'm unaware of any specific drivers for my projector for Windows.

OK I've checked this all out and my projector is registering properly with the ATi drivers but it still insists that the projector cannot support modes above 1024x768.

After checking all the resolutions I can go all the way up to 1920x1080 on the projector butu only if I choose to show unsupported modes, this is driving me insane now, I dont want Windows telling me what I can and cannot use on my own damn equipment.

What files do I alter manually to add these other resolutions to the 'supported modes' list??

Thanks

Tested everything up and down and it's definately an issue with the DVi port for me and the way the drivers/card are seeing my equipment.

I can boot into windows with my DVi completely disconnected and have all the correct resolutions showing as supported for my VGA monitor, but as soon as I plug in the DVi cable it sets both monitors to a max supported resolution of 1024x768 so it has to be a driver/hardware issue.

I reported it to Ati although they tried the standard 'it's your configuration' routine, I replied with more details and listed the testing I have done to verify.

My only way around now is to manually edit the reg/inf files that tell windows what is supported and what isn't, although it seems to change on the fly so that might not even help.

Very confused and frustrated.

P.S. Here is the weirdest thing, my monitor will do max 1280x1024 @ 75Hz - When I look at the properties for my VGA monitor while the projector is plugged into the DVi port, it shows...

DDC: Supported
Display Name: LCD 17
Max Reported Resolution: 1920x1080
Max Reported Refresh Rate: 75 Hz

The resolution and Hz are actually the specs of the projector plugged into the DVi port not for this monitor which is plugged into the VGA port.

Inspecting the projector properties shows the following info:

Display Name: PE5120
Max Reported Resolution: 1920x1080
Max Reported Refresh Rate: 75 Hz

And despite the driver showing these specs, it still trys to say that 1024x768 is the maximum supported resolution.

Hmm, DVI can be picky sometimes. Have you tried switching drivers around? Have you tried using third-party drivers?

I tried the omega drivers but then lost my 854x480 option so had no 16:9 at all.

After messing around with it for 3 days it's come down to the fact that the DVi simply does not detect my Projector's supported resolutions and frequencies properly, so I guess I'm just going to have to hope that a future driver release will fix that.

I went back to regular 5.4 drivers from ATi so at least I can play HL2 at 854x480 which is better than no 16:9 option at all, but the fact that I'm limited to using my state-of-the-art card at resolutions lower than 1024x768 is really chapping my ass.

This kind of sucks. Just a thought, have you tried a different DVI cable? What kind of cable are you using right now? Does the projector support VGA cable connections? Maybe try that using a DVI-VGA dongle. VGA can at least be forced to use a particular resolution, while it's hard to do with DVI....

After thinking over the situation a little I figured that although the projector's name and details are shown, Windows still seeing it as a generic monitor and BenQ do not provide a proper XP display driver for this projector. With this in mind I figured if I could force another driver on the projector that was designed for XP then it may well give me the supported mode access I need. I cant see LCD timings being to different from each other and as the PJ has such a wide range of frequency & resolution support I figured it should work.

I found this after a recommendation from someone on AVS Forums

http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-do...d=1592&os_id=7

A driver for XP for a 16:9 Sony 23" LCD Panel that supports up to 1920x1200, so I'm going to try and force that on the BENQ and see if XP will play ball.

There's more than one way to skin a cat(alyst)

YES IT WORKED!!!!

I just installed the Sony driver for both the primary and secondary display and now I have 4 16:9 options and about 6 4:3 options available to both my Projector and monitor and they are all 'supported modes' so I can choose them in games that support the relevent aspect ratios.

Hopefully this will help others having the same problems.
