Problem with Open GL using Omega Drivers - Advice and Help Please
I use the game IL-2 / Forgotten Battles running it under OpenGL. Although it will function with Direct X this is at a considerably slower rate. I use Omega Drivers on my system, having recently upgraded to the latest ones. Recently I fired up the game (with the optins set to use OpenGL) only to have it more or less lock at the first screen - eg I could move the mouse and nothing would happen for several seconds then the cursor would move more or less!! But hat was about it.
After many tries I eventually changed to DirectX and all functioned normally (but slower as stated.) On checking the config file in the game I found that the main OpenGL driver used called by the game is named openGL32.dll and should be found in the windows / system folder. It was missing so I downloaded it from the internet and installed it - but still no luck. I imagine that perhaps there was a corruption and the file got cleared out when I ran a registry cleaner application???? (maybe) My confusion is this..... DirectX upgrades can be downloaded from MS and installed on a system. But I can no source for OpenGL files (I presume there should be a whole set of driver files for the prupose.) BUT WHERE??????? I checked a web site which said I should download the latest openGL driver from the manufacturer of my video card (in this case ATI radeon) but after a comprehensive search on that site, there is nothing to be found on that site. Should OpenGL drivers normally be found packaged with the Omega drivers? I reinstalled an earlier version of the Omega drivers but they do not function either so as far as I can figure, the openGL drivers do not come bundled with the Omega drivers. Can anyone help please? On searching the internet I have found a few sites listing some relevant dll files that are part of the OpenGL driver package but nowhere can I even find a comprehensive list of what is needed to find if some of the files are present on my machine. any help and advice would be appreciated. |

Guys a couple of points.
The first is, wouldn't the "opengl32.dll" file show up anyway in the file list in the Windows / System directory after installation of the OS ( or would it still be in cab format.???? ) As I said I was able to access a version (a fairly recent one at that) from one of the dll download sites on the internet but it has not cured the problem. Also I cannot access files form the XP installation disk for the simple reason that damn bloody IBM did not provide OS media (ie CDs) when I bought the system. They instead have a hidden partition on c drive whcih contains the backup and recovery components for XP - not sure if these have the original XP files on them and would not be able to access them anyway, i fancy, if they do have the necessary files especially as I do not know which ones I need. Naturally I am also reluctant to do a complete recovery operation as this usually involves (a) losing all of my applications unless backed up first and (b) the need to reinstall the past 2 years worth of XP patches. I have doneit once and its a mammoth headache. As I said, I think that OpenGL requires more than this one library file to operate and give that I have downloaded this file and installed it, my guess is that this is not the whole problem. I did check the files being installed when I reinstalled an earlier version of the Omega drivers (I think it was the Omega 5.4 version) and while it was difficult to see as they were being unpacked it looked as if they all went into the windows / system 32 folder. In short, I am still totally confused and looking for help please. Unlike the other posted reply here, I did not get any error messages just a lockup or near to it! |

the dll should be there after an install of windows.
the opengl.dll you downloaded is probably for an older version of windows, that would expain the crashes. to access the hidden partition you can try going to control panel>admin tools>computer managment>disk managment and see if theres a hidden partition there. you can also try using ranish partition manager to unhide it. http://www.ranish.com/part/ if you still cant get to it then download sp2 extract it and grab the opengl.dll from it. you also mentioned the annoyance of having to reinstall windows patches autopatcherxp (combines them all into one, needs sp2 installed beforehand) http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showforum=89 @ut2k4wikichici you can try copying the opengl dll (atioglxx.dll) from omegas 5.1 drivers into your riddick\system\win32_x86_see folder and see if it works or not, if it doesnt then use drivercleaner and reinstall the omega 2.6.25a. look in C:\program files\Radeon Omega Drivers\v?.?.??\2KXP_INF for atioglxx.dll Last edited by ChoGGi; May 22, 2005 at 06:01 AM. |

ChoGGi There definitely is a partion there. As you say when I use the Control Panel disk management tool it shows up as about a 1.3 gig partion labelled IBM services. But I don'tt hink I can access it except thru hitting F11 when the system is booting. I will check this but I am not sure that it will allow me to access specific files, but rahter just give me the option of doing a complete recovery on the OS.
As you also say the opengl32 file may be older than is appropriate but this is not the problem - the problem is that this (and I would guess other) files were /are missing. I forgot to mention that when I originally had the problem another symptom was that game loaded VERY VERY slowly. When I downloaded and installed this dll from the i'net the game loaded much more normally but still would not run. What would be ideal is to find another source of OpenGL driver files that I cna downlaod as a package but I do not know it this exists. |

as far as i know its just opengl.dll (opengl is just for graphics. dx is graphics, sounds, controllers, and others?, so you expect ogl to be more compact).
when your in disk managment right click on the hidden partition and select "change drive letter and paths"> click add and choose a drive letter for it (you might have to reopen explorer). |

peterm1:
That partition is expressly for restoring the computer to its "out of the box" condition, for sure. It is common practice, in order to play older games on ATI cards, to overwrite the newer version of the atioglxx.dll file in the Windows\System32 folder with an older version that was known to run well. That suggestion could help you both. Also, you may want to try reinstalling your motherboard chipset drivers with the latest version...

Got no problems with OpenGL here, whether it's 4.x series or 5.x.
