Chequered effect

Hi All,

Ive just installed an AIT RADEON 9800se in my Dell pc. Also Ive just installed GTA SAN ANDREAS. There seems to be a chequered effect whilst playing the game, and the icons on my desktop seem to have dots on them. Windows media player also doesnt seem to be playing properly. Is there a patch that can fix the above problems? Please help as im not exactly a computer genius........

Firstly welcome aboard, I moved this from the feedback forum to the ati drivers forum as the FEEDBACK forum is for site related matters not graphics problems.

What drivers have you installed, are you overclocking? can you install powerstrip and give us your core and ram speeds? what you are describing can be either a driver installation issue or a graphics card hardware problem.

Dell normally dont but did they install any software for the card? can you see anything in the bottom right taskbar window section?

Its ok, we all learned somewhere.

http://www.entechtaiwan.net/util/ps.shtm

download this and install ,restart, then when it loads for the first time, right click on the icon which will appear bottom right in the taskbar, go into performance and read us out the core and ram speeds.

Reason im asking this is to narrow down the possible problems and see if Dell have flashed the bios on the card to overspecification, meaning that either the graphics card core or memory is running in an overclocked state. What you are describing especially in windows 2d (outside 3d games) points to a problem along these lines.

Do you notice any issues with this in DOS, your bios etc? normally if a card is totally knackered it will show up display issues outside windows as well.

System Specs

Checkerboard is usually caused by broken pipes on the gpu... sounds like rma to me.

Ok is this the info u need ENGINE CLOCK = 378 Mhz & MEMORY CLOCK = 290.25 Mhz.

No Dos or any other window pops up with an error. The game runs but it has that chess board or chequered effect.

When you start the computer up do you see the problem in DOS before windows loads?

Offical drivers should work fine in windows you dont need a patch to remove chequerboarding - its best to keep things simple until you resolve the issue, for a test try underclocking the card by 30mhz on both core and memory, report the results.

Also use www.drivercleaner.net application to remove the drivers and reinstall, are you using CCC or the old CP btw?

I don't think so, not if it causes issues with your PC. Use the official drivers if they work, and I doubt you'll loose that much performance. Look at it like this: What you loose in potential performance you gain in problem free operation.
