Cat 5.7, Dell 2001FP, KVM Switch Issue

I've been using a DVI/PS2 KVM switch for over a year now, without issue. Now
that I've installed the Cat 5.7 drivers, whenever I switch between my one
computer with a GeForce Ti4200 and my ATI Radeon X800 XT PE (AGP), my ATI PC
won't display. If I start my PC with my KVM switch set to my ATI PC,
everything is fine.

If I switch to my ATI PC while it is in Windows desktop, it won't display,
but if I reboot it, I can see the POST screen, and everything up through the
blue "Welcome" screen. I can even KVM switch between the two PCs until my
ATI PC goes into the Windows desktop, then when I switch to it, the screen
goes into "power save" mode.

My monitor is a Dell 2001FP.

What could be different between Cat 5.6 and 5.7 that could have done this?

...no clue but I suggest just using the 5.6's.

I had this problem because I have an IBM P260 monitor, and when I switch from my DVI display to the analog input, that did happen but it was on a really old set of drivers.

Odd. Maybe it interprets the KVM switching as a monitor failure?

Thanks for the rsponse. But if that is the case, then why does it happen with the 5.7 drivers and not previous ones? I can use 5.6 for now, but my only concern is that if this continues in future drivers, then what am I to do? When Omega releases his tweaked drivers for 5.7 I will try them. That may be my saving grace.

Even if I could replace a certain file with another just to get it to work that would be fine too.

Well, its somethig to do with dislplays and such.

I'd submit a support ticket to ATI just as a first effort, then maybe look at what files configure the display then do a grep or something to see whats changed.

DVI KVM? That's interesting - never seen one of those, and would not ming owning one. What's the brand/model?

In any case, sounds like there is some sort of a problem with probing the video card with 5.7s via a KVM. When you get to Windows Welcome screen with 5.7s when you simply login, does it still go into "Standby"? If so - there may be a problem with detecting your monitor and setting proper resolution to it. What I would do is boot into safe mode (it should work this way) and set resolution to something you know works - like 800x600@32bits and rebooting. Then when back into normal mode, set the monitor to its native (1600x1200@32bits@60Hz) and you should be set.

Also, just in case, what type of DVI cable are you using? Default Dell cable is DVI-D, Single Link. Sometimes at high resolutions (and with KVM) that's not enough, but there may be a solution by enabling Alternative DVI operation mode and/or Reduced DVI frequency in ATI control panel. So try and do that, and see if any of this helps.

There are several different DVI KVM's available. Here's one similar to mine:

I have used this one for over a year and half with no issues whatsoever. Only when I use Cat's 5.7 does this issue occur. When I first got the DVI switch I went through about three or four different brands of DVI cables to get one with a good signal at 1600x1200, and all three are dual link (two from PC, one to monitor).

Resolution doesn't matter either. The only time it occurs is when I am in Windows desktop and switch to my ATI PC. If I boot into Windows with my ATI PC selected, there is no problem there regardless of resolution. It is only when I switch to my other PC, and then switch back to my ATI PC that it goes blank.

Strange thing that I found too is when I tell my ATI PC to "Turn Monitor Off" after x minutes (set it one minute for trial purposes), or essentially sleep mode. Then I work on my nVidia PC, then switch back to my ATI PC (where the monitor is told to be put in sleep mode), the display will come up. It's almost as if the "monitor sleep" mode is reversed, but it isn't because if I have ATI PC selected, and let the monitor go to sleep without switching to my other PC, it will come out of sleep mode with hitting keyboard or moving mouse as it should.

I'm pulling my hair out. While I know I can use 5.6's for now, what happens if this continues with future Catalyst releases? I submitted a trouble ticket to ATI but haven't heard anything yet, nor do I expect to hear anything back.
