??? Newbie seeks sound advice

Hi Guys n Gals

I bought a Radion 8500LE (4X AGP 64MB DDR ) graphics card on E BAY (probably not wise ) Anyway the thing is I got no software or installation disks .I am not terribly well informed about these things as this is a new hobby for me.

So can anyone point me in the right direction to get this card installed in a UWAVE 3 (an oem version of FIC AZ31 mo bo) with Socket A Athlon I .8 XP AND Windows XP -SP2 .
Any good clear advice welcome .

Yes there are new drivers for that specific card anthonio, Visit www.ati.com and download the 5.7 catalyst driver set and install. Make sure before you've installed your ati drivers that you also install your motherboard chipset drivers first. You should (rule of thumb) install the motherboard drivers first > reboot, then install your vga drivers.

Good Luck and welcome to Driverheaven.

Heres good clear advice: Don't buy 8500LE's on eBay

The Catalyst series of card's aren't specific to any card, but they install on any card from the 7000's up (IIRC), and use a unified driver. So downloading the Catalysts, you can't go wrong

Also, be warned that there are options when installing video drivers. The stock ATI Driver has 2 versions: Catalyst Control Center and standard Control Panel. In short: The CP isn't as pretty but its brutally fast and clean, whereas the CCC is (in some cases) slower and slightly buggier (IMO its fine and keeps improving), and it looks alot prettier. I would suggest the CCC as it does have alot of wizards for setting up your card right, for someone who isn't too well educated on this it makes it a hell of alot easier.

There are also tools like ATI Tool or ATI Tray Tools that add functionality to the stock drivers like overclocking and such, which may help out if you decide to go that route.

There are also "modded" driver sets, not supported by ATI (I doubt your card still is anyway) such as the Omega drivers, NGO drivers, DNA drivers, et all, which, once you get comfortable using things like Driver Cleaner and such, give you more tweaking options and better performance for specific information.

Browsing this forum should yield alot of information about this stuff, so take the time and learn as much as you can.

For now, the stock Catalysts would be a good place to start, and I hope I provided some helpful info there about the drivers.

Welcome to DH

Thanks for all that info .
The card seems to be working fine for now and later I will experiment with more advanced options .This PC build is the first one I have done .I am now going to upgrade my old 700GHZ P2 COMPAQ P.C machine to a P4 with new MSI Mobo and processor (P4 Prescott 3.0 ghz-800fsb).....i STILL HAVE TO GET THE MEMORY MODULES AND THE HARDDRIVE .THEN I WILL LOOK OUT FOR A COOL GRAPHICS CARD.AND TFT MONITOR ........... ANY IDEAS WHAT TO GO FOR???
I AM NOT INTO GAMES BUT I AM INTO PHOTOGRAPHY AND MOVIES SO A GOOD CLEAN IMAGE IS ALWAYS A GOOD THING .

BE WELL AND THANKS FOR THE ADVICE .

Well if you're not a gamer then you don't need a powerful video card, any old integrated graphics will do for those hehe.

I'm interested in your 700GHZ P II....what production batch was that? I'm only kidding!

If you have a change of heart towards games, however, you'd do good to get at least an X800XL if you can afford it

As far as memory and such is concerned, it heavily relies on the budget you have.
