My list of things I do when upgrading display drivers:
maybe some use for all..

READ always the RELEASE NOTES
1) de-install all display related utility’s like: rTool , radlocker, multires, refreshforce
(but set them first to default settings!!)
2) Check if there is nothing over-clocked, set to default
never install new drivers if something is over-clocked
3) De-install Control panel ….restart
4) De-install Graphic drivers …restart
(or use the new Ati software-remover)
but set driver options first to default settings!! =optional, just to be safe
5) Disable internet connection, disable virus-checker & firewall
If it is a mayor change from previous drivers, like new options etc.,
use drivercleaner: *READ THE READ ME* first!!!.
6) Install display drivers ….restart
7) Use utils of choice, enable (if needed) internet related program again.
8) Check if monitor is using atleast Plug&Play
do not use default monitor for Win2k or XP!! or better:
use the monitor-inf-file of your Monitor brand.
8) Reinstall chipset/AGP drivers & DX.x

some lines might look bothersome or not needed.....but
I never have any trouble if I keep to this list !!.
9) Go to driverheaven and shout at me if this doesn’t work

Edit: Also do not forget to remove rad linker, found that it has lost its link to the new 3.8

Downloadable Version

I've made this guide in a PDF..you'll need Acrobat 6 to view it & I haven't changed "anything" so it's a little sloppy but works.

DRIVER INSTALLATION GUIDE FOR n00bs PDF Download

I've RAR'ed it to make it small as possible & it's self extracting.

HELP!

Need some major advice/help.

Last night I decided to upgrade my video card from an AIW Radeon 32mb to an ATI AIW Radeon 7500. I had previously downloaded the Catalyst 3.4 drivers and MMC for both ME and XP. ME has drivers from 2001 and MMC 7.1 and XP has a generic ATI Driver.

I disabled my internet connection; followed Genius’ Win ME guide (written in 2001) and his guide for XP to uninstall the drivers in both OS’s then installed the AIW 7500.

After I booted into ME and the new hardware wizard appeared, I navigated to the Catalyst folder and tried to click open the display driver folder but it would not open. The OK button was also grayed out. After about a minute the whole system froze and I was forced to reboot. I tried this several times but received the same results each time. So I decided to try and install the drivers for XP.

Booted into XP, new hardware wizard appeared, navigated to Cat 3.4 XP folder and clicked on display diver. No response and after about a minute computer froze. Rebooted a couple of times, same response. On the fourth try I right clicked on the display driver folder and a drop down menu appeared. I clicked Open and the display driver exe. file appeared. I then proceed to install the display driver. Finally I thought I was on my way. Wrong! After rebooting, XP starts checking the file system {Checking file system on F:}. Once it finishes, the new hardware wizard appears again. I then went to the control panel folder, opened and installed it. After rebooting, I got the file system checking again (this happens every time I reboot) then the new hardware wizard along with two error report boxes:

1st error message
Computer restarted after an unexpected shut down. Microsoft Windows detected a possible device failure.
The system has recovered from a serious error
BCCode: ea BCP1:81295020 BCP81F08880
BCP3: 81196390 BCP4:00000001
OSVer:5_1_2600 SP:1_0 Product:768_1

2nd error message
The drive for the display device was unable to complete a drawing operation. Please check with the device manufacturer for a driver upgrade.

The display driver for AIW Radeon 7500 seems to be responsible for the system instability.
SZ App Name DispayDrivers SZ AppVer :10025157000F2A1002
SZMod Name:atidvag.dll
SZ ModVer:6.14.10.6343 Offset:A41A06EA

After rebooting again, I cancelled all boxes (i.e. new hardware, error ati control panel) and went into device manager. The display adapter shows ATI AIW Radeon 7500. Unknown devices have a yellow question mark along with about 5 or six additional yellow question marks underneath.

So can someone shed some light on what went wrong? Is the Catalyst 3.4 driver corrupt? Did I make a mistake when I uninstalled the old drivers (more so in XP than ME)? As I mentioned earlier, in late 2001 I used Genius’ Win ME guide to upgrade my video card and didn’t have any problems then, so I’m not sure what’s going on with ME. I would use the CD that came with the ATI 7500 but unfortunately it has been damaged so it’s useless.

So if anyone has any solutions please let me know. It’s a real PITA not having full access to my PC.

Thanks

Chantal

By the way, if I were to reinstall the AIW 32mb Radeon would I be able to do a driver rollback in XP or would it be better to let XP search for a driver?

It's hard to say what exactly to do in your situation since we're dealing with two OS's.

I would try to get ME going first since it "should" be easier. Also make sure you delete the ATI folder that is created during the install process. If your not deleting this folder & are deleting some of the inf files it could be causing windows to install the drivers incorrectly. You should go through & follow the guide again then make sure no ATI files exist on your WinME setup. However, you should try the latest drivers from ATI; do you have a reason for using the 3.4's?

Update: I've never used the AIW card but I'm thinking it might require more resources. You might want to repost your issues in a new thread so it will get more attention. Saldy I've never had any experience with any of the AIW cards so I don't want to send you off in the wrong direction.

This guide is a great help to noobs like me and although it didn't solve my problem I learned a lot just doing it.

I recently switched from a GeForce Ti 4200 to a ATI 9500 Pro. Right after installing the Cat 37drivers (I used Driver Cleaner) I got a "severe" error message "Zero Display Service Error". I read the Noob install guide and looked in my registry and found lots of Nvidia keys still in the software and video sections. I followed the guide removing both the ATI and NVidia inf files and entries but, sad to say, I still got the zero display service error right after installing the drivers.

Can anyone help me with this annoying glitch? The card seems to function ok but someone else mentioned getting this error and not having Smart Gart installed. I don't know what Smart gart is so I don't know if I'm missing anything. I did a file search using "Nv" and found lots of old Nvidia files still on my computer. Should I just delete anything that is from Nvidia and maybe try another reinstall?

tut was great and on the spot, everything you said in the tut occured when you said it would. everything went smoothly, but i felt that you kinda rushed through the registry editing. i found myself most confused when it came to edit the registry. i simply didnt know what to delete. also i followed this tut to uninstall the omega 4.2 cats and still feel like i missed files that should have been deleted.

im not shure if my problem is caused by the uninstallation of the drivers or the drivers itself

im running a AIW 9700pro strictly for gaming (none of the multimedia crap)

*edit* i just dont see why somebody cant make a tool that automatically uninstalls everything related to ATI drivers (such as directories, registry, .INFs, etc.) heck ill be willing to pay a few bucks for it.

Help with Registry Step Please

I thought that by reading the Guide through several times I'd become familar with the Steps, and I have, however there is one section that has me stumped.

Re: RegEdit, second step -

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Video\

"Delete all subkeys of video. "

*NEW* I was using the pfd version and the pictures are not the same at this step. I understand to delete all Video subs and Video itself - correct?

Does that mean ALL subs (Folders) under "Video" or just those shown as, in my case, "ATI WDM Configurations" ? Or just the 'contents' of each of those folders? What exactly gets deleted? Here's my situation:

I suspect that it will be the same for the next step in the Registry too, multiple entires.

Reason I'm going this way, following the Guide, is that I've been having driver problems since the last Omega update and it would seem that the multipe entries for one driver (installed, or was installed) would be the cause - I want to start fresh.

I'm a little leery of shuting down as I've already deleted the items in the "Software" portion of the Registry.

Thanks in Advance.

Hmm their not quite the same but you do delete all those keys including video key itself as well. If you're not sure make sure you do a backup of your registry first. The spacing in the pdf is kinda weird too but I just threw it together so something so it could be downloaded and looked at later for reference. IE..like in safe mode with your ethernet pulled.

Yep delete the Video key and everything underneath it. WDM drivers and related keys are recreated upon driver installation.

Thank you gentlemen. I scratched my head for a bit and then noticed the pics were different. It seems to be working now.

Question:

Is it best to re-boot from a complete shut-down (turn off computer) or will re-start work?

Reason I ask is after installing driver(s) everything is fine all day from many 'restarts',due to "you have to restart now" from setting changes, but next day after a full reboot the (winXP) display goes to $&&^$# and if I click the ballon - 'restore resolution" (It think that was it) the computer reboots as if from a fatal error.

I've always been able to fix it from safe mode but am wondering why it's ok from Restart but not from turn off / restart.

Restart is okay but not sure why you're getting the error.

Thanks for the replies Necrosis.

Just for 'fun' I tried it again after seeing your reply. First I used "restart" and it went fine, just as it had all day and the system was purring and game excellent. Then I used "Turn-off". and then tried to start it again -

No go. Got the low res screen and fatal error to an auto-reboot. This time however safe mode failed me. I knew the 'screen' was up but I couldn't see it. I could only get back from a 'restore last known good'.

Funny thing. This time XP offered me a chance to 'review my system status' and it listed Win update, so I clicked there - ALL the updates were required. Now before you say - duh, well. I had all the updates in and I checked the control panel and indeed they were listed. I recovered the vid drivers first and got it running then went and checked updates again - need them. Okay, I DL'd and installed. Reboot and things seem fine today. Started up normal for the first time in a week and a half.

I followed the instructions and DIDN'T delete the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} so I don't know what went wrong.

I should mention that during one of many fresh driver installs I got the Message (like others) that install failed - key files missing, and/or DirectX not installed, it is and showed as such - even tried installing it again.

Last error I got was on the last install of Omegas latest driver (for ATI Rad) - popup alert:

"Severe: Error: No GUID on video section". I recieved another warning just before "saving settings" on reboot that I didn't have time to read. But the Win updates weren't in then either.

Anyway, it seems to be working now - fingers crossed - thanks for the help.

It isn't required, just an option for anyone to try if they're experiencing any troubles. While the guide is fairly lengthy because it is targeted toward new users or anyone unfamiliar with system cleanup, the actual steps can be shortened quite a bit so the cleanup takes very little time.

1). Uninstall old drivers
2). Delete .inf files mentioned in the guide
3). Disable ethernet card or unplug ethernet cable
4). Reboot
5). Cancel hardware installation prompts
6). Delete registry keys
7). Install new drivers
8). Reboot
9). Done

I should probably rework the guide one of these days,

First of all, exelent guide. Second I have a question. Instead of going and manually deletting allt he inf and some of the oem files, will this do the same thing? http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/m...lystutils.html
Also what about drive cleaner, how much of that will it do?
Thx.
P.S. I'm sorry if this already been mentioned somewhere in this thread.

I don't believe that ATI's uninstaller properly clears all necessary information, though it is sufficient in most cases I'm sure. As far as Driver Cleaner, I really have no clue but maybe someone here who is familiar with it can provide information as to what all it removes during a display driver removal.

This is my first time uninstalling ATI drivers. God only knows if I can get the new 4.9's in without making to much of a mess (the threads on the different CP are scary, scary )

Question I have is I should remove ATI's cleaner and use DC right? I'm assuming it would be just as good or better.

Even a bigger noob question ... I only see ATI's uninstaller in add & remove ... no where else. If I wanted to try it out I use it there right?
Sorry to be a pain what I thought this would be the best place to start.

Thanks, clayfish

Sorry didn't notice your post before. I always use ATI's uninstaller first then proceed with removal of registry keys (after a reboot and .inf file removal). I don't use Driver Cleaner myself though I did test version 3 the other day and noticed it left the video keys in the registry with all of ATI's old settings. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal but it may possibly cause problems depending on the system (plus over time you could build up quite a few junk registry entries). In any case, it seems safe to use ATI's uninstaller, reboot, run driver cleaner, then remove those reg keys.

Thanks Genius ... I'll use the ATI uninstaller. Wonder if there would be much in the reg with this being the first driver switch since I built the system (Cat 4.2).

Again, thanks for your help,

Thumbs Up! Drive Cleaner3

Install Drive Cleaner 3 and follow the instructions in the Readme File, its very simple and it works , i hate Microsoft for putting that automatic driver install in without asking for permission first.

No there wouldn't be much there. In most cases even if there were a bunch of keys there they wouldn't interfere with anything. Total cleanup is really only necessary if you're having problems. It's too bad Driver Cleaner isn't doing it all for us though

ATI mobility radeon 7500 dell laptop removal, help!!

Hi. i recently trati mobility radeon 7500 drivers on my dell laptop i get an error after it copies the driver files to system32 folder, saying "setup was unable to complete the installation. cannot continue. try to set up your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running step." well, i then decided to try and remove the current ati drivers before reinstalling newer ones (either catalyst or Dell's latest release). so i tried uninstalling from add/remove programs but get "error initializing" when i try to remove the ATI display driver. i then downloaded ati's removal utility (cat-uninstaller.exe) from their website but it too immediately runs saying "error initializing".... anyway i tried to remove everything manually, (removing adapter from device manager, running driver cleaner 3.3, deleting folders/files/inf/pnf files etc etc/disabling internet connection... and deleting reg. keys) but STILL get the same error during installation when i try to do a compltely fresh install (fresh meaning that i succeed in getting windows to not recognise the radeon card and just finds Video Controller (VGA compatible). i click cancel, an run ati install, doesnt work, same error! so i did it all again and this time cancelled the Video Controller hardware wizard and then did a manual driver install using Have Disk, still get an error saying "error installing hardware, the specified file cannot be found"??? but it does install most of the files before failing, just not enough to actualyl work! so this means each time i do it i have to compltely remove all traces again before trying another fresh install.. very annoying! any ideas?
