Such improvement is something that happens over time. Many of you guys that
are big on OpenGL seem to be looking for a total rewite from scratch. Thats not
time nor cost efective.

They have improved but you'd have to run a bunch of OpenGL benchmarks
to be sure by how much. Most stuff is DirectX anyways and leading into windows
vista it sounds like what MS is planning will hamper OpenGL performance. If it's
true that mean DirectX will even be more prevalent in fallowing years.

Well ATI does go out on a limb to bring you the latest technology. For
example the biggest problems spring from the moving to and 90nm
process it self.

NVIDIA’s new G70 finally uses thing like low-k . The same low-K that
ATI has used in R360 and RV360 and up. That when NVIDIA was asked
why they didn't use it they even went so far as to call called it dangerous.
It allows Lower heat and less power usage and has been successfully used
by ATI for a couple years now.. Now finally NV picks it up... Now amd, intel,
ATI etc will have gone 90nm and NV will still be behind the times in the regard.

I'm pretty excited about the upcomeing cards should be verry interesting....

I'm not sure about the legal disclaimer that would be required because even
if you don't hold Ati at fault if you fried you monitor you should would associate
it with them. Even though you may know what you doing a good 90% of users
don't and yes they will hold a grudge @ ATI after going “what this?” and frying
their expensive monitor.! Their fault , they will be complaining to ATI, calling emailing,
tech support. People that many would even besides being be angry and would buy
a competitors product.

Yeah that is a valid concern- I was thinking about that a while ago.. Maybe a good way to incorporate this would be to have this feature only work with a reg hack program that activates it, like an unnamed competitor's coolbits.

Maybe a good name for the reghack would be coolres. People that don't know enough about monitors and drivers to use it without damaging their hardware wouldn't even know about it, or what it does. Most monitors have built in protection now, I know mine does and it is more than 3 years old. People couldn't complain then, as it would be an officially unsupported feature. It would be a cool thing to have in official drivers anyway.

Also something that I noticed was that in Omega drivers, there is never a resolution that my monitor does not support.. Not sure how that works, because 1200 x 900 is not listed in the ATI drivers, but it is in the Omega drivers as well as other custom resolutions, but none of them ever go over the bandwidth of my monitor or "overclock it" in any way.. hmmmm...

True the specs seems great on r520 and the move to 90nm also sounds promingsing, but I fear ATI has had alot of problems this time, resulting in a slower r520 then expected, eg. it will be released with 24 pipelines instead of 32, which could open up for a 7800gtx ultra card with 32 pipes :O

But ok lets be optimistic and hope r520 is going to be such a big suprise as r300 were

Well Zardon, I'm glad I took your advice.

I did some quick benchmarking with what I already had installed (Doom 3 is at 1024 HQ):

Omega 4.12:

3DMark01: 18,662
Aquamark 3: 50,187
Doom 3: 52.5 FPS

ATI 5.8:

3DMark01: 17,806
Aquamark 3: 51,490
Doom 3: 54.0 FPS

Other than the drop in 3DMark01 (which doesn't really matter), I like the improvement . The CCC is looking nice, and runs fast.

You really should look into moveing to windows XP for better performance.

BTW: You 2001SE scores seem a little "strange" You might close anything
running in the background and run it again to be sure. Make sure your
performance slider is set on the same value etc...

I'm just not quite a big a fan of XP yet as I want to be. I have a legal copy of XP SP2 sitting around waiting to be installed.

Also, 3DMark scores.. strange as in low? I always thought they were a bit low myself. I had everything closed.

Thanks for the drivers, Terry and crew!

I was hoping for new drivers soon, Battlefield 2 runs on my system like peanut butter and jelly

It even broke my Radeon 9800 and caused artifacts in my BIOS! (really) o_O But that was probably just a coincidence.

I'm looking forward to the control panel tomorrow! After all, Battlefield 2 can't run when CCC is using 50 gigs of ram. (j/k terry)
