desktop redraw
I'm having an odd albeit minor problem with my x800xtpe refurb. After running pretty much any game my desktop image is slow to redraw after quitting. But I don't just mean immediately after quitting, I mean anytime it has to load that desktop image again. So if I minimize all my windows that you can visibly see the desktop image slowly loading onto the screen from bottom to top. If I change the desktop background, or reload the current one the problem goes away. Anyone else have this problem?
Using 5.8s, haven't tried it with any other version. Was previously using a 9800pro with the 5.6s, no problems with that. |

It sounds like you are low on RAM and the desktop image is being loaded from the hdd, so check memory usage just before you do Alt-Tab.

Windows xp does have a problem like that in some respect..... mainly if you are low on system memory..
Xp requires a min of 256mb (usable min) although it can still run on 128mb but many apps are not loaded. How much memory do you actually have installed. |

1 gig of memory. It's definitely not a windows problem, that's why I mentioned my previous video card. My previous card had less vram too, 128 instead of 256.
edit: Also note that I'm not alt-tabbing from the game. This is after I've quit the game. There is tons of memory free. Once I'm back in windows I can open any window (explorer, firefox, notepad, solitaire, anything) maximize it, and minimize it (or close it) and see the redraw. And I can maximize and minimize it as many times as I want and still see the redraw. It's like it's never being cached in memory. If it was a lack of free memory why would changing the desktop image to similar sized bmp make a difference? Last edited by rahba; Aug 29, 2005 at 07:35 PM. |
