Settings to fix shadow flickering in game?

I've just recently got my hands on a copy of Independence War 2, a great but older space sim. The one problem I have is that shadows on objects flicker and warp quite badly, and there seems to be issues with z-fighting. The problem is almost non-existant when your close to an object, but gets exponentially worse the farther you get away from it. I was wondering if anyone knew of any driver settings or tweaks I could use to possibly fix this problem.
