8500DV and what drivers?

Is this the promised land...sure looks like it. Can't believe I stumbled into this site with all the info.

Now I feel more like the nOObie that needs a dOObie. This is my first go-around building a PC and I'm finding the 8500DV too advanced for my feeble brain.

After I installed the latest round of MS XP Pro updates for security oversights, my PC only runs about 3-5 min. before the desktop freezes into various colorful screens that completely freeses the system.

I just completed Genious' instructions contained in the Stickie with other various postings and got about 15 min. of satisfaction, then the same freeze ups. Why would it do the same thing in both Catylist v2.2 and v2.5?

Could it be something other than the display drivers?

The only thing I recognized in the error messages was a file names "ati2dvag.dll". I did a search in C: and found 5 of them; 3 with different versions and 2 within cab files.

I got no knowledge of this to figure it out and I need some direction before losing my cool (what I have) and starting from scratch.

Any help will be appreciated....really,

Polock

If you've just built the computer, make sure all installed memory is seated correctly and that the PSU is up to the job.

If deleting the many ATI driver files that get left around after an uninstall is not for you, along with a clean up of all ATI registry entries using 'RegCleaner', then format and reinstall Windows.

Don't use DX9 unless there is a compelling reason and look for any of the following drivers (listed in order of performance):

wxp-w2k-r8500-6-13-10-6193-efg.exe

wxp-766-04-020129x-2545e.exe

wxp-radeon-6-13-10-6071-efg.exe

IMHO these earlier drivers give the best performance (at the expense of a few glitches) - '6094' works well too!

I have no problems with re-installing drivers cause the guide found here makes it pretty straight forward. May need some assistance to start over... a little.

I've tried the Catylist v2.2 and v2.5 drivers and have the same problem. This leads me to believe my problem is something else.

I have little knowledge of what's going on...just trying to make some kind of deduction...

my Dear Watson

Just to shed a little more light...I got nothing running on this PC. I just installed XP Pro to a 10 GB partition, added Norton 2002 and the ATI software. It was either after a XP update or a virus definition update that all started going bad.

Would it do any good to post the error message I get?

re: 8500DV and what drivers?

Best to try one thing at a time to isolate any hardware / software issue - ie: not loading evertything on all at once.

At least you can rule out the drivers now...

Have you tried disabling the 1394 DV on the 8500DV to see if it is causing a conflict (there is a dipswitch on the board to do this)

Actually, I hadn't ruled out the drivers. Last night I started from scatch with the Cat 2,5 drivers. I had missed an oenxxx.inf file my first time thru...thought I discovered gold So, on the second run I got to the point of installing the wdm 6.13.10.6173v3 drivers and as soon as I hit the exe....freeze up, just like before. Could it be something in that file? To test my exe files, I downloaded new just in case something was corrupted in the first download and will try again Sat. AM.

As you can tell, I'm a nOOb with no logical order...just rambling. Here's another tidbit, if it helps. I tried to run Test Direct Draw under the Display tab of the DirectX Diagnostic Tool and it ran for a little while before freezing. All other tests went well.

Before trying the Cat 2.5 again, I'll try disabling the IEEEDV. Can this be done within the device manager, like the NIC card?

Havin' fun now...thanks for guidance,

Polock

A wise man once said, "If standing in a hole that's getting progressively deeper, throw away the shovel!"

Ihave returned for another attempt at bailing me out?

Originally, I thought I had driver problems, but it turned out being the ATI AIW 8500DV 64MB card. While it is being RMAed back to Newegg, I picked up a ATI 7500 at the local BB for $60. I need a backup for testing anyway.

To make a long story short, I goofed in the order of driver removal and now I have an Rundll error message (Error loading C:WINDOWS\Systen32\atiiiexx.dll) when trying to remove the ATI Driver in the Control Panel's Add/Remove area.

Am I up the creek, or can this be remedied? If I go ahead with my new 7500 display drivers will it create another ATI Display drive in the add/remove of the Control Panel?

Oh, by the way, the shovel has been thrown away

The good thing is I'm really getting an education in here...thanks,

Polock

8500DV and what drivers?

To fully remove VGA drivers WITHOUT an OS reinstall

Uninstall existing drivers including any requisites
reboot
Upon the restart - ignore/dismiss offers to re-install drivers
Run RegCleaner and delete all references to the VGA adapter
reboot to safe mode (normally F8 after the BIOS screen invokes it)
Upon the restart - ignore/dismiss offers to re-install drivers
IN SAFE MODE - search for all VGA drivers (be sure that only VGA drivers are deleted)
reboot
Upon restart - ignore/dismiss offers to re-install drivers

now run the installer for the target VGA display card

If following the above fails - follow it through again BUT goto 'start->run->regedit. Then 'seek and destroy' all VGA -regedit- references instead of using RegCleaner.

(if you are unsure about regedit - DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS!!!)

STILL NO JOY

Reset your BIOS to 'non-tweaked' settings, Optimal Performance or Fail Safe and repeat ALL the above.

DOES NOT WORK FOR ME EITHER...

Follow the above - let Windows (2K or XP FOR NEWISH boards) select and install your VGA adapter's default driver - REBOOT and try another driver release.

FINALLY

Check that your installed memory is seated correctly
Suspect the usual culprits: Cheapo PSU's, Generic memory,
S-O-M-E VIA chipsets, S-O-M-E Creative soundcards, S-O-M-E ATI drivers, overclocking, overheating, Pilot error etc...
Use a good quality Power Supply with sufficient UUUUMMMPPHH!!, USE a standard Windows VGA driver (normally no acceleration is enabled or specific features will be absent).

LAST DITCH RESORT

Swap out the VGA adaptor for another (cheapo VGA cards may work just fine so go for something similar to what you intend to use)

LAST, LAST DITCH (GRATUITOUS) after trying an OS re-install, driver re-install, tech support CALL, RMA for replacements and/or binning 'duff' components:-

Snap the mobo (enjoy the satisfying sound!) or VGA board in half and savour the pain you inflict!!!

That seems to be the first problem...removing the ATI Display drivers from the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Keep getting the rundll error "Error loading C:WINDOWS\System 32\atiiiexx.dll".

I've followed the guide and the following file folders is all that's left after searching for ati*.*:

C:WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
C:WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\sp1.cab
C:WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\driver.cab
C:WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\sp1.cab
C:WINDOWS\LastGoodSystem32\DRIVERS
C:WINDOWS\system 32\ReinstallBackups\0000\Driver Files

I thought these didn't matter if they were left behind?

Also, the registry was deleted per the guide as well.

I really apologize if I seem dumb...I'm a nOOb

Thanks for all your time,

Polock

Now just cross thy fingers :)

Wanted to put in a little follow-up just in case someone else has an interrest. As I stated in previous posts, I had followed the Guide for nOObies posted here, but I had a little snafu in that I would get an error message when trying to remove the ATI Display Drivers from the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

I had checked and double checked everything to be deleted like in the guide and finally decided...what the hey...let's go for it. I installed the Cat 2.5 display drivers and control panel without a hitch and the Radeon 7500 is purring right along...for now.

Looked back in the Add/Remove Programs dialogue box and only 1 ATI Display Drivers. Do I question this or just celebrate?
