ATI Tray Tool Freezing

Hey ive not long had my new lappy which came with an X700 128Mb card and bundled ATI drivers. Ive been trying to install the latest Omega Cat 5.8 on it and it appears that the actual drivers install fine, just that when you try and run ATI Tray Tool the system freezes everytime. I tried reinstalling and telling windows to auto load tray tool on startup but this just causes the system to freeze on startup everytime so ive had to reinstall XP. Any ideas why Tray Tool is causing it to freeze all the time as i know that the 5.8 drivers now have support for the mobility x700 and tray tool comed bundled with the drivers

Ok, im almost completely sure its ATI Tray Tool causing the problem...Am i correct in thinking that the new Omega Cat 5.8 drivers have a different version of ATI Tray Tool? Ive just installed the Omega Cat 5.7 drivers and they work fine, including ATT. Does anyone know why the new version of ATT is freezing all the time? and is there anyway to install the Omega Cat 5.8 drivers but with the older version of ATT? Thanks

Have you tried uninstalling the previous version of ATT (open the folder where your 5.7 version of the driverset is located, opening the ATT folder in there, and run the uninstall.exe file located there...) then installing the latest version that came with the 5.8's?

Edit: After uninstalling the ATT from the 5.7 set, you may want to reinstall the 5.8 set as a whole - there could be custom hooks in the installer that need to initialize that make them work properly together - just a thought...

Yeh ive tried that, still no luck. Tryed it from a clean OS reinstall too so there were definately no earlier versions on ATT there and it still froze. Is it possible to install the Omega 5.8 bundle then uninstall ATT, then reinstall the earlier version of ATT?

You can uninstall the ATI Tray Tools by going to the 2.6.61 folder within the Radeon Omega Drivers folder within the Program Files folder on your hard drive and running the uninstall.exe file from there - but whether an older version can be installed successfully without it freezing is a question for Ray. Hang in there, he'll probably respond here in time...

Right, ive just installed the Omega Cat 5.8 fine and told windows not to autoload ATT on startup (to prevent it from freezing) then uninstalled ATT from the driver folder. I then restarted and installed an earlier version of ATT (1.0.2.705) and it works fine. Am i missing out on any really useful upgrades by using this earlier version?

On a side note, i noticed a post ealier from a guy showing similar symptoms to what i was having.

http://www.hardwareheaven.com/windows-xp-radeon-display-drivers/84795-lockups-omega-mobility-x700.html

Only i know now that it was ATT causing windows to freeze on startup when it was trying to load it (windows loads fine if you dont select ATT to auto load during the driver installation) and was interested to see he had an Acer 8103 laptop...I have the Acer Ferrari 4005wlmi? Do you have any known compatibilty problems with Acer running x700 128mb?

Ive tryed Omega Cat 5.8 on my desktop and everything works fine first time so just problems on the lappy

As I remeber there are no chamges for X700 Mobility in last release.
It is very strange.
If you run ATT manulay will it freeze Windows?

Yeh it freezes windows constantly on boot up if uve enabled autostart during installation and also manually everytime you attempt to open ATT with the Omega Cat5.8 drivers installed. With no drivers installed you simply get the 'No ATI device detected' error message, but as soon as I install the Omega Cat5.8 and attempt to open ATT there is a hard lock and have to reboot

With the ati mobilty 9800 freezing occurs aswell. Whether the prog is autostarted or started manually. The tray icon appears then the system locks and a few secs after the blue screen appears saying something about 'ati2dvag.dll'. Then have to restart comp. Uninstalled current ATT's from Omegas and installed the older .720 version which seems to run fine.

I'm having exactly the same problem with ATT with a mobile x700 128mb too. I installed latest omega's (5.8) and told ATT to start automatically. Then whenever the machine boots up it starts with not being able to click anything then it just hangs (no BSOD).

If i stop ATT from loading at startup (had to edit registry and remove the entry from the HKCU/s/m/w/c/Run key) it all loads ok.

Then if i try to launch ATT from the desktop shortcut it hangs

Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, click System Information. Expand Components, click Display. The number is in the form of this (from my system)

PNP Device ID PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4152&SUBSYS_7C19174B&REV_00\4&9AE DED5&0&0008

I just copied the line and pasted into this post...

After some investigation I found point where computer hangs.

This is procedure from Catalyst to check connected displays. I don't know why it hangs computer! Control Panel and Control Center both uses the same procedure !
