Uninstall b4 install?

When I read about 3D-graphics drivers I always encounter info that one should uninstall the current driver, restart the computer and then install the new driver.

Here comes some n00b Q:

 1. Is this correct or do I only have to uninstall previous driver if the 3D card is/isn't from the same manufacturer/brand/type/etc?
 2. But will the computer be able to visualize something after I have uninstalled the existing driver and starting it up again?

I find it best to remove drivers before updating to new drivers...download Drivercleaner pro then follow the read me that comes with this app.

But don't use this app before removing the drivers as it will increase the chance of corupting windows.

A)Remove Drivers

B)Reboot into safe mode

c)Run DC (selest the correct option for you're card)

d)Reboot

d.1) I sometimes re-install the chipset drivers at this point.

e)Install new drivers.

Is this whole procedure neccesary for only small upgrades like from Catalyst 4.6 to 5.10?

considering the has been around 15 driver updates (give or take 1 or 2) the will be some huge changes from the 4.6 cats.I'd personally would say yes.....it can be done in around 5 mins.....

(im not to be held responsable if things don't go to plan)..

If one speak in general terms then?

The obvious answer is always to follow those instructions, but what about how hard core gamers in fact do in reality when a small upgrade has come.

 1. Is it possible at all to install over the old version?
 2. What kind of problems could you expect to encounter if it's not working?
 3. Is it a risk of damaging either the card or the computer so no roll-back option is available?
 4. Is it so that you tend to see if the upgrade is a big one - then you follow the proper steps?
 5. Isn't the Driver Cleaner overkill?
 6. What inmportant things does it remove that normal uninstall won't?

1. Yes, but it is highly recommend to uninstall before using drivercleaner that can befound on this site .

2. if the new instalation does not work p[roperly you might want to reinstall a older driver, they can be found on ATI website .

3. no it shouldnt damage the computer or the card but since you uninstall the driver there s no roll back option availabel and if something goes wrong you have to reinstall a older version

4. you should always follow the same procedure for any upgrade .

5. drivercleaner is really helpfull and can avoid many problem when upgrading.

6. This little apps just remove anything related to the driver that can be left from previous installation wich ensure that you dont get corrupt driver files when you upgrade .

Yes, Windows will use the standard VGA driver ... just low resolution ...

1. Yes, but at the very least you should run the ATI uninstaller to delete your existing drivers, reboot when it tells you, and then install the new drivers from VGA mode. Rebooting once in Safe mode and running DriverCleanerPro is a good idea, but not essential.

2. If you don't uninstall, sometimes Windows gets confused about which driver files to use and either uses the older driver, or a mixture of old and new driver files. Sometimes you get major FPS problems, or even program crashes as a result.

3. No. But it can be a pain to rollback to an older driver, especially if you don't have a copy handy. Its a good idea to not delete the older driver file until you're happy with the updated version.

4. No. At least follow the update procedure that ATI lists in their README every time. It's not like it's going to take more than an extra minute or so...

5. DriverCleaner is helpful. If the vendor drivers (and I'm not just talking about ATI here) were perfect, DCPro would not be needed.

6. DCPro will remove old registry entries by being more aggressive about nuking stuff, and it will hunt down old driver files in the .cab files Windows creates to backup the working driver files in use by the system. ("cab cleaner mode")

Only uninstall the ATT and ACP (or CCC), don't need uninstall the driver itself

Installing an ATI Catalyst or Radeon Omega driver set needs uninstalling only (and if necessary):Such install doesn't need uninstall the ATI or OMEGA driver itself; it just doesn't hurt to uninstall/reinstall it.

The above results from RADEON OMEGA DRIVERS README:

1) What's New in Omega Drivers, Important Info:

Since these drivers include a non-standard version of ATT, I would recommend that if you have any previous version of ATT installed, please uninstall it before installing these drivers, not doing so may cause unknown problems.
2) Other Important Notes, REMINDERS:
 • A- If you have the normal ATI drivers installed, uninstall the ATI Control Panel or CCC BEFORE upgrading to these drivers, the Omega Drivers already have the CP integrated and another CP will cause conflicts or other problems.
 • B- There is no need to uninstall ANY previous drivers (ATI or OMEGA) when installing these, the new ones will overwrite any previous settings, but if you still want to uninstall them completely, is ok.
