Radeon 9600 Unable to install ANY driver

Dear all,

I tried to update my drivers after some game kept crashing and found myself unable to do so. In fact, any Catalyst, DNA or Omega driver refuses to work. I appear to be stuck using the Omega 2.5.5.1 drivers which I was initially on. I doubt there is anything special about the 2.5.5.1 drivers.

What happens is after installation the computer reboots, but just after the 'Windows XP loading' screen, the screen is completely incomprehensible with different colours. Windows responds normally, but you cannot see what you are doing (I've memorised how to restart the computer without seeing what I'm doing). Problem goes away once I uninstall the drivers and either let the computer 'find' default drivers (which cannot run games) or the 2.5.5.1 set. It never finds others automatically, I have to force install them. If I search for drivers once the default drivers are installed, it always returns that 'the latest drivers are already installed on this computer'.

I have looked in these forums for a solution and havent been able to find one. I am completely stumped as to why it is doing this! I really don't want to have to resort to a format.

So far I've tried:
Uninstalling/Installing
Windows Clean Up!

Computer Specifications:

AMD Athlon XP 2800+(2.09Ghz)
1.50GB DDR Ram
Direct X 9.0c
RADEON SERIES 9600 128MB (no idea who the manufacturer is, lost the information)

I'd start by downloading the latest Drivercleaner just follow the link on the homepage and install it read the readme text and follow the directions If you have any questions post back before trying it. I have to go back to work but I'n sure someone will be able to answer your questions. BTW Welcome to DH

"the screen is completely incomprehensible with different colours."
i seem to remember that happening before, i think it was cat 5.1 or .2. try rebooting once or twice. can you get a screenshot?

Darkfoss: No success with Driver Cleaner.

ChoGGi: I tried to get a screenshot, but it comes out as if nothing is wrong! The best way to describe it would be thousands of thin rectanges that change colour all the time. You can sense the screen changing colours (i.e when you bring Windows Taks Manager up, all the boes go a lighter shade) But it is totally impossible to see anything.

Running DxDiag, I have a file 'directx.cpl' which seems to be out of date. But I have DirectX9.0c so I can't upgrade any more.

May it be the IRQ? currently my display adapter is on IRQ 16. When I install any new drivers, they show up in Safe Mode as IRQ 10. Is that relevant?

.cpl is for your control panel
there was a new version of directx 9.0c released dec 2005
http://www.techspot.com/downloads/33-directx.html

did you try leaving the drivers and rebooting, it might make it go away.

about the irq got me, anything else using 10 or 16?

Tried that dx upgrade, didnt change directx.cpl. i think I saw the file being copied when I was installing the 2.5.5.1 drivers back, so it might be a problem with them.

Regarding the IRQ, when I try to install newer drivers I find this happening:

IRQ 11 RADEON 9600 Series (Omega 2.6.87) OK

But when I revert back to 2.5.5.1:

IRQ 16 RADEON 9600 Series (Omega 2.5.51) OK

There are no conflicts in IRQ 11. Lucent Win modem uses IRQ 16 as well, but I havent used it for a long time and I doubt it interferes.

no sense in having a modem share an irq especially if you dont use it.

After re-reading your posts it kind of sounds like after you install the new drivers your monitor is being forced into an unsupported resolution or refresh rate. Have you tried going into safemode after the driver installation and setting the specs for your monitor manually? Are you using a custom resolution or a 3rd party app to set them?
The CCC could be having trouble using the EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) It's turned on by default. I always turn it off so my daughter doesn't change to an unsupported resolution. I have a Samsung 712N LCD and the entire 5.XX cat's have incorrectly displayed the Max Reported Resolution as 1920x1080 when it's actually 1280x1024.

No luck, tried to lock the resolution using Multires but same result. I could try just turning off the EDID setting, I imagine its in the settings somewhere?

System Specs

Just making sure... Have you unstalled the drivers via Hardware Manager, Uninstalled all ATI stuff in the "Add/Remove Prog Files" (Including Omega Drivers, and Ray Adams AtiTray),
restarting,
cancel the "windows detected new hardware",
running DriverCleaner Pro,
restarting,
cancel the "windows detected new hardware",
then run the latest Omega Drivers?

I had a similar prob with my X700 (in my case, it was freezing when new drivers were installed)
