Help Installing Cat 3

I keep getting Unreal-engine game crashes on Omega and Cyborg's drivers. I want to try the Catalyst 3.0's, the 6255 set.

I've just down loaded them into my downloads directory. When I fire off the exe, it says I need to uninstall the current driver set.

Please help a moron here - do I unpack the new driver set first, then uninstall, then point to the unpacked drivers when I reboot? Or....

Never seen ATi recommend uninstalling the old drivers first - been on Cyborg and Omega for a long time, but the crashing's just too much.

I also downloaded the DriverClean app. Should I use this, and when? Is it safe to use, since I presume it noodles around in the registry...

Thanks folks.

Not positive..but I think the DriverClean program works just for nVIDIA drivers. Someone correct me if I'm wrong..

As far as unpacking the Cat 3.0's, when you double-click the .exe, it should unpack them to "C:\ATI\support\wxp-w2k-radeon-7-81-021218a-007192c-efg" by default. If you are then having troubles installing the drivers, you can always uninstall the display adapter from the Device Manager, then restart and let Windows reinstall your card. Then, you should be able to install the drivers. Did you download the correct type of drivers (i.e. "Powered by ATi" vs. "Built by ATi")?

I guess if all else fails, just go ahead and check either this or this guide out. It can't hurt..

that cleaner program is for ATI also and works pretty good. There is a new version to be released in a few days that should correct a few things. One of them being the inability to cancel out of winXP auto detect wizard after installing winXP sp1. SP1 puts ATI and Nvidia inf's in your windows\inf folder that you must delete in order to be able to cancel out of winXP auto detect new hardware wizard.

wow, if you've never cleaned out old drivers and installed freshly, you're in for a big tread Just rememeber, if you use any drivers based on the cat 3.0 set, you need to install dx9 too...

first thing to do though is create a system restore point.
then get to place you can cancel out of auto install wizard in winXP
then after canceling wizard, install dx9
then reboot and install cat 3.0's and control panel

check out the thread on the driver cleaner for a bit more details on steps 1 and 2

I never installed SP1. But I DID install Dx9.

Maybe I'll wait for the new version of DC.

And I DID try the clean install once, and poochscrewed my system so bad I had to reformat - hence my hesistation.

Whew!

I found 317 ati* files, and the system wouldn't let me delete alot of them. Cleaned out the registry...when I rebooted, black screen. I hear the Reaper in my ear - "reformat, son".

Booted to VGA mode, installed the drivers and the control panel - all seems okay now.

System Specs

I just saw this thread. My program is safe to use. My program indeed does things in the registry, but i know what i am doing when i programmed that, so you can use it safely. Also if you want the new version that is tested now and which is also the final if no bugs are detected is also stable. PM me and i give you the link. Read the readme file included on how to use it.

Also if the program was not safe i wouldn't have brought it out into the public.

Thanks Spike. No disrespect intended. I'd be happy to try your program. PM me a link. edit: N/M, I saw your PM, thx.

Anyway...My Radeon 8500 128mb absolutely will not play Unreal anymore. I know it's ancient, but I like to jump out and play a game now and then, and I keep getting hashing errors/CTD. I was kind of hoping that a DX9 upgrade and the new Cat 3's would help, but no dice. Omega's drivers, Cyborg's drivers, two or three sets of the ATI drivers. CTD.
