AGP 8x problems

Gah I just don't get it. My motherboard has an agp8x slot. Yet when i go to agp8x...

When i play guild wars my computer crashes, and when i play battlefield 2 weird splotches and squares of colour (hills have bright green, blue, red, turqoise, etc. coloured squares on them) of colour appear on textures, and smoke effects turn into floating gray squares. Also, soldiers grow spikes out of them.

BUT when i play at agp 4x, all the problems go away. I know, i know, i could just play at 4x, but it does bug me that i get all these wierd problems at 8x.

I have a radeon 9800 pro 128mb, and fastwrite is off if that matters.

Help please?

Same thing happens to me with a asus mobo, 9800 pro 128 mb. I am starting to think that the 9800's have something wrong with how it was built...

Well, I successfully ran AGP 8x on my old Asus board.

I'm using an ASrock now, and I had to uninstall my video drivers, and find the latest AGP driver from the chipset driver and install that again before the video drivers.

It seems to work now.

I've done that before, just not in that order. I'll give it a shot.

Other than trying the Sis AGP driver version 1.21, and perhaps a BIOS update if available, not much to suggest.

Ensure that the PSU rating, particularly on the 12v rail, is adequate, as perhaps 8x operation just tips it over the edge.

Sis chipsets can be a little quirky, especially in the AGP and USB areas. It also seems to be better not to use the SiS IDE driver, as the Microsoft driver in XP SP2 seems to be a lot smoother - for older operaing systems, the Sis IDE is probably worth using.

My bro has a 9800 PRO, and used to have a SIS motherboard. He used to have lots of probs, like funky textures and random crashes. No ammount of updating drivers fixed the problem. Then he upgraded to an Nforce2 Ultra 400 mobo, and all the problems went away.

Yeah, just run it at 4X if it works. There are dozens of articles online demonstrating that there is a tiny difference in performance between 8X and 4X, and actual performance decreases are possible with some systems.

You aren't losing anything, don't worry about it.

Could this be the same problem i am having with my sons system, i replaced his fx5200 ultra with a 9800 pro 128 mb card, he has an Asus A7N266-C motherboard that only has a pro/4x agp slot. When i installed driver, there is a utility "SMARTGART(tm)" that clocks the agp slot back to 1x for stability, when i change it to 4x, it will not stay changing back to 1x, This makes no sence to me when everyone is trying to overclock, flash bios to xt to make thing run faster. How can i get around this

Download and install the GART drivers in the Nforce2 drivers that are on the Nvidia website. Usually, if the AGP settings keep reseting, it usually indicates that the GART drivers are old or not installed. Try it
