Messed up graphics card drivers on clean install of Windows
Hey guys,
I have some problems with my graphics card. I've just installed XP Pro, nice and clean, brand new. No problems there. So, I go to install my brand new Omega Drivers. I've tried the official ATi ones, I've tried the latest Omega ones. Both times the same thing happens. When it reboots my screen has turned awful. I've included an image at the bottom with the error message when I go in display settings. It's all gone wrong: ![]() I tried with some older drivers, and, again, the same thing has happened. So... I'm a bit stuck. I'm going to try the 4.12 drivers, since I've heard good things about them, but I don't hold out much hope. Also, I know that my graphics card is fine. My Xp Pro install is, in fact, on a dual boot system. I have the latest Omega drivers installed on the other install, and they work fine. However, on this second OS, they just won't work. I'm running out of things to try. Does anyone have an ideas or things that I could try? It's really beginning to annoy me now. Thanks a lot guys. |

How about some system specs. What type of Video card do you have? What version of the Omega's are you running now, and make sure you downloaded the XP version (not the windows 9X). What other OS are you running that works? The the 4.12's and see what happens.

Okay, speccy specs.
The OS I have where it works is XP Home (don't bother to ask me why I'm dual booting Home and Pro - I don't even know). I've got the XP Drivers - which is why that message confuses me somewhat. At the moment, I'm not running any Omega Drivers on Pro - I've just left the computer as it was when it installed. On Home, I'm happily running Omega Drivers 2.6.42 (Catalyst 5.6), with no problems. My graphics card is a Radeon 9800 SE 256mb thingy. Computer... well: P4 3.00 Ghz processor, 1 gig ram 500 gigs of hard drive Two OSs are: Windows XP Home SP2 Windows XP Pro SP2 I think that's about it really. I'll try the 4.12s then and get back to you... hopefully with some good news. |

Don't you need .NET framework 1.1? I dunno, maybe i'm just crazy. But otherwise, why not just run windows update? Maybe its a wierd bug that was fixed a while ago.

Net framework... good point. I'll try that. Although, having said that, I don't have .Net framework on my Windows Home install. I did have it, but then I uninstalled it a while back, sans problemos...
Btw - 4.12 didn't work - same problem as before. |

I installed the latest Net framework, tried my drivers... same problem. I've completely run out of ideas for what could be the problem here though. I mean, I haven't even done anything to my system yet that could mess it up.

After installing Windows XP Pro, have you installed the motherboard drivers from the system CD?

a cd should have come with your motherboard that contains the chipset drivers. Depending on the system it could be Intel,VIA,Nvidia,AMD,SiS,ULi. Find out the specific chipset your board uses and get the most recent drivers that the chipset requires

I think I've upgraded my Motherboard drivers now. I'm just going to download Everest and check.
Anyway, in the mean time, I've sort of got my graphics card to work now. In the end, I don't really know how I did it. I installed them again... it didn't work. Then I rebooted, and doubled clicked on the setup.exe file again, and it seems to have installed them again, and this time they kind of work. I say kind of because at certain times I have this green flicker on the screen. You can see it on the common tasks pane in explorer, and really prominently in games. I've captured part of the screen here from Quake III Arena so you can see what I mean. ![]() I hope you can see what I mean there, there's lots of small green squares making up lines all over the screen. Is this a known problem? Thanks a lot guys. |

Actually... I may now have fixed it, by repeatedly installing and reinstalling... scheeze, that must have been the most work I've ever had to do to install one driver.
