Well, the CSS is responsible for system and audio drivers on ATi chipset motherboards so that is why this is possible. The fix does look rather strange in a video driver release note PDF though. Especially since its Europe only

Here are two cropped images focusing on the street cobblestones in 3DMark 2001's Dragothic IQ test, try opening them in two tabs in your browser or image viewer and swapping between them:

http://www.pkix.net/~chuck/ATI/IQ02I_2001_HQAF.bmp
http://www.pkix.net/~chuck/ATI/IQ02I_2001_no_HQAF.bmp

I used IrfanViewer to zoom them to 300%, and I think the dark lines between the cobblestones are a bit sharper and and more in focus in the first image than in the second, but it's subtle. This was with 4xAniso and no AA. It's possible that I'm fooling myself that the option makes no difference, but judge for yourself. :-)

After playing a bit of BF2 last night, it seems the 6.2 is noticeably smoother / faster for me on my 850XT.
I'm not too sure if its just a driver improvement or the fact that I chose to not use the Control Center this time around.
I used the driver only download along with ATI Tray Tools.
Being that this is the first time I've used the driver only version, I don't have much to compare too so, ... YMMV

I can't see any difference ... Sorry!

And I stopped using AF in my applications. If I wanna improve the game's appearance in any way, I'll stick to AA and high Res ... that's the best for me, I think.

Thanx anyway, cswiger!

I think BF2 seemed smoother too from 6.1. I used the CCC tho and the HQAF. Played great and looked great with every thing max but no shadows with a rez of 1280 X 960. (how I always play)

A good thought. Does anyone with an x1800 model have a chance to do some comparisons and see whether the HQAF toggle does anything on those cards?

CAT 6.2 has a massive cpu hit compared to previous versions ~17-22%. Please see this thread for more information and testing results:

Of course HQAF works on 1800 cards.

Wonderful. I'd still like to see some screenshots of the difference it makes.

(While it appears true that a driver manufacturer can obtain great interest from the userbase simply by adding a new checkbox-- even if the option does nothing on a particular card-- at least I try to obtain real data. Even if the data contradicts what I thought was going on.... :-)

System Specs

These are good drivers. They gave me a nice increase in Q4 (about 5% in my own timedemos), and a marginal bump in 3D Mark 03 and 05. CSS Stress Test result was identical to Extreme 5.13, ~56.5fps 1280*960, all details maxed, 4X AA and 16X AF.

I tested HQ AF with D3DAFTester13a and it does nothing on my R9800Pro.

I had no issues and in 3DMarks I'm getting CPU scores similar to ones I had with previous sets.

Huge performance drops on slower processors like AMD Barton and Palomino.

Anyone who compared the "Original ATi Catalyst 6.2" with "DHzer0point 6.2" and "Omega 3.8.221 (Cat 6.2)" by quality/performance in games?!

Thanx in advance!
