Guild wars issues

Hi there, folks.

I'm a big fan of Guild Wars, but I'm having some issues with it at the moment. If I try to play it with the "auto-detect" settings for my 9800Pro (and in 1024X768), the game freezes after some time (randomly). I either get a music loop or it still plays fine, but after a few seconds, the screen goes black and all I can do is reboot my PC... The strange thing is I can still play the game forever if all the settings are set to low... Better than no game at all, I know.

I've tried many sets of drivers (I always install the Omega ones) and nothing changes. The freezes occur even after a clean install of my system. And Guild Wars is the only game with which that kind of problem happens (F.E.A.R, BF2, HLČ & Lost Coast,... all run fine).

You can see my system specs in my signature and I'm currently using the Omega 2.6.87 (good performance and no artifacts here). My Windows's updated, my other drivers too, DirectX9.0c is installed, I didn't overclock anything, both CPU and MB temperatures are fine, no spywares nor viruses,...

Someone told me the problem can be caused by faulty DDR sticks. Sounds interesting, but then why do all the other games I play run flawlessly? Thanks in advance for your tips.

It looks like just an issue with something the game does differently from itself.

All those other games you mentioned are DirectX 9.0 and GuildWars reders using DX 8.1

Check your DirectX files maybe then? Using DXDiag.

Its a start

Those other games are also single player. I would look at maybe problems with your NIC/Modem. The sound loop thing also says maybe sound card problem, maybe try setting your hardware exceleration to a lower level in Direct X. I would doubt its a RAM issue, though you really can't rule anything out.

Strange that is only happens with GW, maybe its to do with all the new updates to the game. Did it just start happening recently? What date?

First of all, thanks to you two for replying.

Concerning DirectX8.1, everything looks fine. I have no problems with games like UT2K4. And the test results are alright.

And yes, the freezes in GW started several months ago (around four-five months I think). I immediately thought it was because of the updates, but there have been so many of them since then.

The soundcard is fine and all my online games are okay, so it's not my modem (GW ports are opened both in the Windows and in the hardware firewalls).

I would disable the firewall and AV while you play to see if that fixes it. Also, download and run MemTest to see what you get (it takes forever, search the forums or google for more information). If you have another video card handy, or can borrow one, it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot to see if the problem is the video card at all.
