Radeon 8500, Win2000, 2.4 drivers

OK, this is frustrating. My problem is I can't seem to get the Catalyst 2.4 or higher drivers to install on my system.

I went several weeks without playing Everquest. When I tried this past weekend, apparently they've put on several patches, causing my entire machine to lock up and a power down/reboot is the only way to get out. So, before they'll really do any troubleshooting/help, I have to have the latest drivers on my machine. Their most current supported is Catalyst 2.4.

The drivers from my CD are version 5.13.01.6015. After problems doing the Catalyst 3.0 drivers, I started at the beginning, using add/remove programs to succesively install each driver, starting at 5.13.01.6037 up through .6166 (Catalyst 2.3). No problems with any of them.

2.4 and higher all, almost immediately on login, give me some sort of display distortion/corruption. Sometimes it looks like various lines on my machine have "shifted" to the left, sometimes there are vertical lines of distortion, text is hopelessly scrambled, etc.

I've followed the guides on here about doing the complete uninstall/reinstall of the drivers, still the same thing. The steps were all on the money except that when I was trying to clean out the registry, many of the keys listed were not there. (In Win2000, there doesn't seem to be any SYSTEM -- CONTROLSET* -- CONTROL -- VIDEO keys).

I even tried running the .exe file, dumping the inf driver files into a directory, rebooting into safe mode and manually installing the driver via the Device Manager, as one poster mentioned trying in the Driver guide sticky thread.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
