Durability testing

All three tough drives in our round-up claim that they can endure the worst conditions possible, so to make sure this isn’t just PR waffle we set up two special tests which will show us exactly how durable they can be under really extreme conditions.

1st test: Boiling water resistance

All manufacturers claim their drives are water resistant, so we put this to the test, not merely by dipping them into a cup of cold water however – we decided to boil the water to 100c and test just how tough they really were. At that temperature the viscosity of the water is the minimum possible right before it turns into stream, making it one of the most easily flowing liquids in nature. So the drives not only have to endure the high temperature but also have to resist being dipped into a container of water with the lowest viscosity possible.

All three of our drives survived our boiling water test. After removing them from the boiling water and let them to cool down a bit, we plugged them to a USB port and all three worked without any sign of damage, data loss or data corruption. High temperatures and boiling water appear to pose no danger for any of these three drives.
