19 Flash Drive Roundup

Corsair Padlock 2GB

The Corsair Padlock is supplied within a plastic blister package, inside is a USB extension cable, a basic manual and a large wristband. If you would like a USB flash drive which can secure its data without the need of any software, the Corsair Padlock is probably the first of its kind. The drive has a numeric keypad on it with which you enter your pin before you connect it to the PC, or else the operating system will not recognize the drive at all, a very clever concept. The pin can be changed by the end user but you should be careful not to forget is as that would render the drive useless.  After you remove the Padlock from the USB port it will automatically lock itself after a few seconds. On top of the Padlock there are three LED lights; the green indicates that the drive is unlocked, the red that the drive is locked and the blue is just a data activity LED.

The biggest downside of the Padlock is its size; measuring 86x24x13mm (LxWxH) it is the largest drive in this round-up and the use of the USB extension cable is almost always necessary. You will not find any software in the Padlock, since encryption software would obviously be useless.

Kingston DataTraveler 100 2GB

Kingston are one of the most reputable memory manufacturers so no round-up would be complete without them participating. The DataTraveler 100 which you can see above is one of the simplest Kingston flash drives, aiming towards best value rather than highest speed. It is supplied with no bundle at all. The DataTraveler 100 is a very simple plastic drive without a cap; the USB connector goes in the plastic body of the unit. It is lightweight (12gr) but not very small. When the USB connector is still hidden inside the plastic body the drive measures 60x22x9.5mm (LxWxH) which is merely average by today’s standards.

Although there is no lanyard or wristband included in the package, there is a spot where you can attach one at the bottom of the drive. There is also a very dim green LED data access light on the drive, barely visible in a bright room although that is not necessarily a bad thing. There is absolutely no software to find preloaded in the drive from the factory.

Lexar JumpDrive Lighting 4GB

The JumpDrive Lighting is currently the fastest USB flash drive Lexar produce. It is supplied in simple packaging and nothing is bundled with it, we wonder why Lexar did not bundle a wristband/lanyard with their best drive. The JD Lighting measures 77x22x11mm (LxWxH) which is a normal size for a flash drive. The body of the JD Lighting is perfectly chromed, a faultless mirror finish without the slightest defect, unfortunately due to this it is prone to fingerprint marks.

The cap of the JD Lighting can be inserted at the rear of the drive to prevent loss; however that instantly rules out the use of any keychain and/or lanyard as the drive has no other place to attach one to. The black stripe around the drive is actually rubber, which can dampen the shock from a fall; as long as the side of the drive hits the surface first. A blue data access LED light can be clearly seen right next to the company logo at the top. There is a wealth of applications that can be found preloaded into the JD Lighting from the factory; the File Shredder which permanently erases files (making recovery impossible), the Encrypted Vaults (which can password protect certain files and folders in the drive) and finally the Power2go software with which you can install and run many Windows applications and/or copy personal setting and favorites to the USB drive and use them in any other PC, given it is running a similar operating system.
