19 Flash Drive Roundup

Lexar JumpDrive Secure II Plus 4GB

The Lexar JumpDrive Secure II Plus has no included bundle. The dimensions of this drive are 68x21x6mm (LxWxH) and although it doesn’t appear like a very small drive, it is very lightweight. The Secure II Plus can be bought with a capacity of up to 8GB but there is no choice of color, it only is available in black.

The design of the JD Secure II Plus drive is subtle and there are many details worthwhile of attention. The most important of them is the digital capacity meter found at the front part of the drive; this is the only USB flash drive which can tell you how much data is stored on it without having to plug it into a computer. The meter shows how much of the drive’s storage capacity is taken by data in percentage, and it is extremely accurate as well. At the front of the drive you can also see Lexar’s company logo which is also the blue activity LED light of the drive. There are two applications that can be found preloaded on the JD Secure II Plus; the File Shredder which permanently erases files making recovery impossible and an 256-bit AES software which can password protect certain files and folders on the drive.

OCZ Rally 2 2GB

Another USB flash drive from a very reputable manufacturer, the OCZ Rally 2. Looking at the package we can see that OCZ is very confident about their product as they claim that “rapid transfer rates surpass the competition” and they offer a mind-easing lifetime warranty with it. Along with the OCZ rally you will get a basic lanyard and an USB extension cable, ironically it is perhaps the only drive in our round-up which includes one and doesn’t need it! The Rally2 is only 68x15x8mm (LxWxH) which makes it just as wide as the USB connector you need to insert in the USB port.

The OCZ Rally2 is only available in black and has an orange data access LED light at the rear of the drive, right where the lanyard’s mounting spot is. At the front of the body we see the drive’s marketing logo and the rear has an engraved OCZ logo. A smaller OCZ logo is engraved on the cap, this cap is tiny and is easily lost. There is absolutely no software which can be found in the OCZ Rally2 preloaded from the factory, although OCZ offers a format utility for download via their website.

Sharkoon FlexiDrive EC1 2GB

Sharkoon is a company well known for their computer modding parts and peripherals but not for their USB flash drives. In order to see if they can compete with established manufacturers we plunge their most popular drive into our round-up, the FlexiDrive EC1. The FlexiDrive EC1 has no bundle at all; not even a basic lanyard. Its dimensions are 66x18x10mm (LxWxH) about the size of a basic cigarette lighter, however it is oddly lightweight.

Sharkoon markets the EC1 as a starter model characterized by simplicity, so we did not expect it to be much of a looker. True enough it is a simple black drive with a chrome bottom, entirely made out of thin lightweight plastic. The body of the FlexiDrive is very light and although it is simple we cannot claim that it is a bad looking drive, nonetheless it certainly isn’t very durable. It may survive some accidental drops but there is no way it can survive a forceful impact or hit. There is no software preloaded in the FlexiDrive EC1.
