NZXT Guardian 921

The Case (Interior)

Product image
Removing the side panel of the Guardian 921 reveals a simple steel ATX case interior, made messy by the many loose cables. The motherboard tray is not removable and there is only a small support ledge for the PSU, which has to be installed before installing any tall coolers on the motherboard.

The rear 120mm exhaust fan is pre-installed from the factory and it is the only black fan this case has, but its specifications remain similar to the LED fans of the case. NZXT also installed a simple but highly effective tool-less locking mechanism for the expansion card slots of the case, they unlock by pressing at the top of them and lock when you push them back into place from the rear of the case. The slot covers are reusable as well.

The Guardian 921 has room only for three 5.25" devices, two visible 3.5" devices and four 3.5" HDDs. Three of the four HDDs can be installed in the cage at the lowermost part of the case, while a fourth one can be installed at the top of the case behind the LCD screen.

No tool is needed for the installation of most of the devices as NZXT have installed plastic locking mechanisms and provide you with drive rails. The 3.5" HDDs cage is also removable, although we don’t see why that would be necessary and you definitely are going to need a screwdriver in order to remove it. The front intake 120mm fan has a black frame but it also has blue LED lights, unlike the rear fan.

The installation of a system inside the Guardian 921 is very straightforward and no different than what it would be with most other midi ATX cases. The tool-less mechanisms will simply save you some of the time needed to fully assemble the system. The position of the HDD cage is clever and the HDD’s will not protrude towards the motherboard and obstruct any long GFX cards, that said the Guardian 921 is not a very deep case and we are still afraid that cards longer than 25-26cm (10") will not fit. There is nothing blocking the PSU so any product should fit, no matter how long it may be. Unfortunately the simple design of the case offers few spaces where you can hide cables, so cable management may turn out to be a challenge.
