PC Specialist Apollo System

PC Specialist Apollo System

Inside is a very impressive looking build. All of the wiring is routed appropriately and tied in place where necessary. They have even gone to the trouble of attaching the Asus LCD poster device in a useful location. In terms of how this build compares to  something from an industry leader such as Alienware we would say that there really is not anything to separate one from the other, PC Specialist have built their system that well.

The processor installed in the review unit was a Q9550 which is based on the Yorkfield core and is clocked at 2.83GHz with 12Mb of level2 cache. This was installed on the Asus Rampage Formula which shipped with the latest BIOS version available at the time the build completed.

A top quality motherboard and processor require some excellent memory and fast graphics cards to really create a great system and in this area were not disappointed. The review system arrived with eight gigabytes of Corsair DDR2-1066 (5-5-5-15) and two 512Mb ATI Radeon HD 4870s configured correctly to use CrossFire.

The majority of components used in the rest of the system are of an equally high standard, as we stated earlier the optical drive is BD/HD compatible and the two hard drives consist of a 300Gb Western Digital and a one terabyte Samsung although the second was not initialised before shipping which we found odd.

Our only real concern was the use of a FPS branded PSU, there were no issues with the system as such but we would always choose to use a better known brand for such a component. Luckily one of the options on the configuration tool is a Thermaltake 1200w model so there is at least one alternative, even if it is very expensive.
