Gaming Today: GTX 260 V Radeon 4870

BFG GeForce GTX 260 Maxcore OC
Everything about the BFG GTX 260 Maxcore OC is impressive … from the informative packaging to the quality bundle which includes a HDMI dongle, there is very little to fault. The warranty provided by BFG adds to the overall feel of a quality product as it covers ten years in Europe and Lifetime in the US.  The card itself is the star of the show though, it runs quiet despite having enhanced clockspeeds and the performance is exceptional for the price. In each of the games we tested the GTX 260 Maxcore provided the highest framerates and in games such as Dead Space and Fallout 3 the results were nothing short of astounding.

Gainward Radeon HD 4870 1Gb Golden Sample

Throughout testing the Gainward 4870 performed well but unfortunately not at the same level as its competition. Instead it is fair to say that its strengths probably sit in other categories, the cooler for example is far quieter than that found on the reference models and its ability to output 7.1 audio is a great feature. Another strong point for the card is its selection of display outputs, having onboard DisplayPort and HDMI means that not only is the card ready for connection to any monitor or HDTV currently in the hands of consumers, it is also future proof for models which are only just hitting the market with DP. If ATI/Gainward were to find some way to drop the price of this model it would make it much easier to recommend as a gaming card but as things stand it is completely outclassed in this department by the GTX 260.

Overall Thoughts
When we started this roundup of performance in the latest games we expected the GTX 260 and Radeon 4870 to perform at a similar level. This proved to be the case in a few titles such as Far Cry 2 and Crysis Warhead but generally the GTX performed at a much higher level with the newest Nvidia drivers. While ATI offer the best media functionality with their cards (7.1 audio and better HD acceleration) Nvidia offer Physx with their cards, something which will appeal to every gamer out there. The forthcoming Mirrors Edge for example gives us a great demonstration of why the GTX is a preferable option for gaming. Therefore, for enthusiast gamers, there really is only one choice this holiday season when upgrading graphics card, the new 216 core Geforce GTX 260.
