GTR Revolution (PC)

GTR Revolution (PC)

We have looked at other GTR games before in the past and conclusions state that Simbin are one of the greatest developers of racing games on the PC platform. Combined with the RACE series they have proven to be class leading titles and today we are taking a look at the latest expansion to RACE 08, GTR Evolution.

Evolution has brought a big addition to the table in the shape of Nurburgring. This is probably one of the most famous settings on the planet and the 14 mile behemoth course is faithfully represented by Simbin. Nurburgring is a gruelling endurance test and it is only after many failed attempts that you will begin to taste success.

The other content  within Evolution is not quite as awe inspiring as the Nurburgring additions. You are given new cars such as the Evolution Concept cars and the WTCC Extreme cars. These are clearly aimed towards the extremely experienced drivers as they are so powerful it takes all your concentration to keep them on the tracks. As well as these concept cars there are another 26 new GT car models spanning across four classes which bring the games total to 12 racing classes and around 50 vehicles including the SRT/10, Corvette C5-R, Audio R8 and Koenigsegg CCX.

Thankfully all this new content is expanding into an already solid game which we looked at before and it is sure to appeal to many racers across the globe. The mechanics are solid with realistic physics as well as support for 25 players online and a WTCC championship mode, custom championship and an arcade mode. The overall package means you have one of the most complete racing solutions on the PC platform.

The game is supplied with various driving aids to help less experienced drivers get around the course but at the end of the day, this title is not aimed at the casual racer. The weather system also works well to add a certain level of realism to the game with both light and heavy rain supported. You will need to use your cars wipers to remove the rain from the windshield and it really works well in the context of the game to see the rain beating down the glass. Cars also handle very differently in the wet as you have to make use of special wet weather tyres while adjusting your racing style to match the reduced grip levels.

The graphics engine is much the same as before which while not groundbreaking is more than detailed enough to create a realistic environment. If you have semi recent hardware, such as a decent Core 2 CPU and Ati/Nvidia GFX then the game should run very well at high detail settings. A nice touch in the game are the full 3d interiors of the cars and the driver movement inside them … you can even see drivers leaning into the corners sometimes as they make turns or get jostled about after impacts.

The audio is very strong and the development team clearly know how to record and present an authentic racing experience. The ambient sounds of trackside activity are also well catered for, such as engines being revved in the paddock and cars already on the track changing gear in the distance.
There are various ways to view the action of GTR Evolution and the in car perspective is obviously the one of choice as it sets the mood for the most realistic setting, your vision is limited by the cars frame, seat position and weather … such as rain.

Fans of this series are clearly set to enjoy this expansion with Nurburgring making a welcome entrance into the fold. As a bundle, the retail box comes with both Evolution and Race 07 and is set to become a good start to the year for racing fans. Highly recommended.

Much like Race07, not a bad thing.

The engine might be showing its age but it still looks well.
Very realistic car and ambient noises.
The addition of Nurburgring adds a lot of value to the replay.
(not an average)

Great fun and one for the more discerning of racers.
