Mafia 2 (PC): Gamingheaven @ E3

Gamingheaven is at E3 and we sat down with the 2K Czech division to get some hands on time with their much anticipated Mafia 2. With the recent sad news of the delay until early 2010 we wanted to check out the virtual world of Empire City — and boy are we happy to say it is looking awesome !

It is the heart of winter in 1945 and Empire City is covered in snow – the scene is set for the demo, (a few hours into game time) when the main character Vito is trying hard to prove himself within the ranks of the criminal organisation. The city is gloriously rendered with beautiful high resolution textures and the environment is full of life as citizens roam the streets, going about their everyday business.

The task on hand today is to kill “The Fat Man”, a businessman who owns a distillery on mafia turf but who also refuses to pay protection money. It is our job to right the wrongs to the family name and teach him a lesson by sending him to the nearest morgue. This mission is a three man job and you are joined by leader (and made man) Henry and cohort Joe; another member of the Mafia on the way up the ranks.

The briefing explains that this mission will be an ambush from a window opposite the distillery with Joe and Henry armed with Tommy guns as backup while Vito is in charge of a mounted gun to take out the vehicles as they appear. As the mission unfolds, the scene is set and the Fat Man arrives with his bodyguards. Vito unleashes thousands of rounds of bullets into the entourage and the body count is high. The Fat Man’s car explodes and he escapes the fiery wreckage while managing to escape down an alleyway into the distillery.

A high octane chase ensues and we are treated to a new cover system in the same vein as Gears Of War, which is never a bad thing to see. Ducking for cover and shooting looks great and the cut scenes which appear during the mission are simply stunning. The original Mafia had an amazing story line and it is great to see that no corners are being cut to ensure the followup has the same level of presentation and story-boarding.

The engine is very capable and we were told that further optimisations would be made before final release to ensure that the frame rate remains high across a broad cross section of system hardware. There are a wide variety of visual affects on offer from sophisticated lighting techniques to great ambient heat haze when explosions and fires are set alight.

As our time with the demo code progresses the Mafioso catch up with the Fat Man and Henry rams a gun in his mouth in true movie style fashion. A gun shot rings out and the immediate assumption is that Henry has shot him, however it transpires that the Fat Man had a pistol in his hand and defended himself. Vito and Joe close in to avenge their fallen colleague and justice is delivered.

Henry is still breathing, but is slowly bleeding to death. Helping Henry out of the distillery the guys fight more enemies while avoiding the falling rubble of the burning building beside them. Getting into a car they drive Henry to the Mafia family doctor which is a challenge as the roads are covered in snow and ice and the cops are giving chase after being alerted to the fire fight.

The demo ends as the gang run into a roadblock on a bridge and the cops block both ends to make escape seemingly impossible. We will have to wait until the final release to find out how the guys get free from this predicament. Will they drive off the bridge or jump off the bridge onto a waiting boat?

Mafia is due for release in 2010 and GamingHeaven is very excited about this forthcoming 2k Czech release – the potential is already showing from the code we played today. 2010 is going to be a good year for Mafia loving gamers and we will have more coverage before the end of the year.
