A few days ago Codemasters released a demo of Overlord II on Xbox live however if you haven’t had a chance to look at it then we had some hands on time at E3 with the demo code ourselves.
Those who played the original will remember that at the end of the game the overlord comes to a sticky end leaving his followers leaderless and running amok. Overlord II brings a new leader into the world and during the tutorial you get to see his story and how he ended up in the position of big mean nasty dude. The new Overlord’s training takes two decades to complete and while this is happening two other races rise to prominence – the Sanctuary and the Glorious Empire.
The demo takes place in an icy wasteland heavily populated with baby seals … seals which I might add that can be maimed until your evil heart is sated. This time around the developers have focused on making the evil forces slightly less cute and more sinister – I do say slightly however as the whole concept is still firmly tongue in cheek (and just as amusing).
The mechanics are very similar and the four minion types work in the same manner as the first overlord game. The demo only has access to the primary brown minions and to get through the demo you need to get enough life force to create a small army to fight your way through to the boss fight … a mutant style Yeti creature. The demo also offers a good view of the mounted wolf steads. Additionally, your minions can ride other items, such as ships and catapults which should bring a nice edge to the already entertaining combat system.
Codemasters have not lost the humour laden context of the series and with the updates and improvements they hope to address some of the criticisms of the first title. Overlord II is out very shortly and make sure to check out the full review on GamingHeaven in the coming weeks.
