Battlefield 1943 (PS3)

Battlefield 1943 is available for the Playstation 3 as a downloadable game and it is a great indication of just how far the store platform has progressed as a viable medium for purchasing fantastic indepth games rather than simple, basic puzzle games.

Battlefield started in 2002 with the extremely popular Battlefield 1942 which was a WWII shooter with a strong focus on multiplayer interaction. Other titles in the series include Battlefield 2142 which was another big seller for Electronic Arts. Battlefield 1943 is more a true successor to BF1942 with only the 3 maps from the first game making it into this one. There is also only one game mode available called Conquest which pits two teams from the USA and Japan against each other to capture and hold five strategic points. Basically the idea is to make the online experience as simple and streamlined as possible so gamers can just jump right into the game and start fraggin’ their buddies.

Battlefield 1943 supports up to 24 players online and from the title screen you can make a private match, join in a quick match or jump into a game with friends which is a great feature to see included. There is also the option to create a squad of four players to play as a team with the ability of sharing a voice channel during play. The squad members can be found easily on the HUD display and mini map and this group can be respawned in close proximity.

The game has three classes to choose from – scout, rifleman and infantry and they all have different weapons which work better at various ranges. Everytime you die and get respawned you can select a different class and killed foes drop their equipment means means you can effectively switch attack style during battle. Additionally all the friendly flags can be used as a respawn point so the more you control the more options you have for getting back into the thick of the action. You get unlimited ammunition however you still have to reload the weapons which can take some time especially if you are exposed or facing an enemy. The game has received a lot of playtesting and fine tuning because it is very well balanced and the maps offer a lot of opportunities for strategic battles. Hiding a sniper in a tower or using base entrances to allow infantry for quick charges offer a huge variety of combat situations.

As would be expected, vehicles play a big part and around the maps are boats, planes, jeeps and tanks which give players access to the sea and air as well as the land areas. Planes are quite difficult to control but once you get used to them they can be devastating at taking out powerful land vehicles such as tanks. Equally so, the planes can be shot down by a well placed shot from a sniper or soldier.

Playing well means that your rank will increase and you accumulate experience for assists, captures and kills. As well as trophies there are awards for other elements such as weapon efficiency.

Unlike many downloadable games, the graphics are not created by a few guys in a small development team. Digital Illusions CE have created a fantastic world with superb lighting effects and a tremendous amount of detail throughout. It isn’t a bug free game however as we fell through the map a few times, but generally it is a polished and smooth running experience. The Frostbite engine is very capable especially when you take into consideration the destructible environment. Trees can be destroyed with heavy bullet fire and tanks can run over some buildings as well as objects like fences. They can even blow up buildings which might be home to a few troublesome camped soldiers. It doesn’t always work as planned with the tanks sometimes not taking out a building but generally it is a great addition to the realism of the environment.

So far we have discussed the multiplayer elements and there is a very good reason for this – there is no single player element, at all. You either play with friends or strangers online and if this appeals to you then there is simply no other downloadable game with the quality and polish of BF1943. I have played this for the last week with several friends across the globe and we are all now massively addicted, so much so that we plan the times to meet up online after work, it has been quite some time since I have been into organised team gaming so for this alone it is worth a look. If you like an epic style online experience then this will surely deliver, because with up to 24 players there is a lot of room for strategic combat.

With everything being so streamlined and smooth running you really only need to worry about meeting up with people and blasting the hell out of them.

One of the most fun online experiences I can remember.
Very capable engine which is smooth running and almost glitch free.
Orchestral sound track and effective sound effects.
If this kind of game is your thing then it should be already in your cart.

Absolutely brilliant.
