Enermax Eco 80+ – The Unit

Enermax designed the Eco 80+ as a mainstream product, but that didn’t stop them from making it as attractive as possible. The Eco 80+ is a compact but not a particularly lightweight unit, as it’s considerably heavier than most 350W-400W units currently available. The matte black paint looks simple but it is very well sprayed and durable. The 120mm cooling fan has orange blades and a golden protective grill. Enermax have placed the sticker with the electrical specifications of the unit at the left side of the chassis, therefore it will be visible through a windowed side panel.

The rear part of the Eco 80+ is perforated which allows the warm air to escape to the rear of the case. As well as the three pin power socket, a typical rocker on/off switch and the company logo can be seen at the rear part of the unit. The Eco 80+ 350W unit is not a modular PSU and therefore all of the internal cables are found bundled at the front.

The strange ‘bat wing’ blades are supposed to increase the fan’s airflow by up to 30% and the ‘twister’ bearing reduces the fan’s noise by 1-2dB (A). The fan’s maximum rotational speed is 1500RPM and its maximum airflow is 69.15CFM.

The base design of the Eco 80+ is very similar to that of the Pro 82+ and Modu 82+ series with slightly lesser components responsible for the lower price and performance. There is only one transformer providing power to all of the power lines, except for the 5VSB line which is powered by its own tiny dedicated transformer. At the primary side of the unit a Hitachi HP3 220μF/400V capacitor can be seen aside a fairly large filtering choke. All of the secondary side capacitors are industrial grade capacitors from CE-TUR (Jen pan). The heatsinks are much larger than what we’d expect to find in a unit with this kind of output.
