Wipeout HD Fury (PS3)

Wipeout HD Fury (PS3)

Product image
Wipeout HD Fury is an expansion pack to the successful HD Wipeout released a while ago for the Playstation 3. There are eight new tracks which run at the full 1080p, 13 new enhanced versions of the original ships as well as 5:1 sound and a plethora of new trophies.

Studio Liverpool have upped the new additions with ranking options which gives the game a much greater sense of progression than before. Depending how you do in the race means you earn points and it heightens the tension with online battles.

One of the most impressive aspects of the new expansion pack is the subtle changes to the colour palette. The focus has been shifted from the hospital like whites and blues and they are replaced with meaner, more aggressive reds and pinks. Not only this but the music is also more aggressive to set the tone for the entire experience – this is Wipeout on steroids. Even the menu and GUI is radically changed and the Studio Liverpool logo has been replaced by a red tunnel – starting the campaign mode gives the gamer access to the music choices at hand – you can play the ordinary HD tracks which means the colours shift to the mood before or you can tackle the new high octane music with the Fury Career. There are a total of eighty new medals and the pacing of the game is much faster. The challenges are more intensely designed with the focus on combat as well as speed.

While all of this is impressive so far in bringing a new feel to the franchise there are also three new modes introduced which bring some rather large changes to the franchise.

The Eliminator events change the ordinary race into something much more violent. While you still race to get in front the laps and positions do take a lower focus when compared with the destruction on offer. You really do just have to blow everyone to pieces. The developers have also added a new option to perform a quick 180 degree turn which adds a lot to the level of combat on offer – if you are in the lead for instance and get the Quake attack you can spin around and target everyone behind you to knock them back further. Additionally every time you strike an enemy or kill them (and even completing a lap) earns you points but you can’t absorb weapons in Detonator because they just create a short lived shield instead which means that making sure every weapon pick up counts is top priority.

Detonator is a mode which places you against no competition and no weapon pick ups – you just have a gun with 15 shots that can be reloaded at will and you are also given a plethora of mines which need to be fired. This mode is still a zone mode so you escalate in speed the further you progress carefully shooting and reloading. Additions to this are EMP pads which charge the EMP and the more you charge the meter the further this attack wave will travel to detonate the planted mines. As the speed increases this is a frenetic experience especially as the placement of the mines changes and it will get to the point where you will be guessing the placements so you can avoid them – even at times firing around corners to get the strike.

Zone Battle is a mode which requires you to reach the target area before anyone else. In theory this sounds like a competitive version of Zone mode but it has been adjusted to offer something different. The tracks have been covered with Zone Pads and these little strips hold energy that lets you refill your own energy or vault ahead a little. Refueling on energy gives you a short lived shield.

Graphically the game is very impressive and it moves so fast and smoothly it really does need to be seen to be believed. As the graphics are full 1080p HD quality they are razor sharp and massively impressive on a huge ass plasma or LCD television.

The Fury expansion pack is a great addition to the Wipeout franchise which is thankfully not a huge outlay either. The expansion pack changes the game style enough to offer a new ‘feel’ to the experience and one that veterans will love because it is very combat oriented, more so than any I can remember. It is also great fun to play with a friend because you can challenge each other times and engage in a little one on one challenge.

There really is a very good reason why this is one of the globes favourite racing games.
1080p HD graphics which is a rare thing on the PS3. very impressive.
Great pulsing soundtrack with a more aggressive edge to get the heart pounding.
Trophies, new maps, new mechanics. It doesn’t get much better than this.
(Not an Average)

Highly recommended if you have a pulse.
