Core 700/800 Series vs. Core 2

In our final test for this review we have a comparison which will be most useful for those who have been sitting with their Core 2 systems wondering when the best time to make an upgrade would be. In the graphs below the fastest Core2 processor, the X9770 quad core CPU is compared to Intel’s two new Lynnfield processors.

As the results show, gamers will not receive much of a boost in performance over the older architecture, though the further down the model is in the core 2 family the larger the gap in performance will be. The result is completely different for those who require high memory bandwidth or enhanced multi-core performance. In those scenarios the Core i7-870 offers a great performance increase, with a particular highlight being multi-core rendering. If we were to enable turbo boost technology in this test the gap between core2 and the 870 would be even higher.
