Nvidia halting chipset development – legal wrangles with Intel

Nvidia recently confirmed that it has put a hold on its successful chipset range due to legal battles with Intel. Robert Sherbin, the lead corporate communications spokesman for Nvidia said "Nvidia will postpone further chipset investments".

Sherbin was also adamant in stating that the recent rumours about abandoning the mid and high range GPU market are "patently untrue".

"We have said that we will continue to innovate integrated solutions for Intel’s FSB architecture," Sherbin said "We firmly believe that this market has a long healthy life ahead. But because of Intel’s improper claims to customers and the market that we aren’t licensed to the new DMI bus and its unfair business tactics, it is effectively impossible for us to market chipsets for future CPUs. So, until we resolve this matter in court next year, we’ll postpone further chipset investments."

Intel have stated that their four year old chipset license with Nvidia does not in fact cover the Nehalem or Core series of processor. Nvidia disagree and the issues will be resolved in a court battle in 2010. Nvidia also sell chipsets for competitor AMD’s product range but this will also be put on hold.

Nvidia’s recent launch of the Fermi architecture was also a shock to many as it didn’t incorporate PC graphics. While Nvidia have included a sophisticated cache architecture for physics and ray tracing algorithms as well as IEEE-754-2008 floating point accuracy, both of these have been detailed by analysts as being unnecessary for 3d gaming requirements.

To further fuel the debate Intel have recently stated to the press that they will merge graphics and CPU inside a multi chip module with the Clarksdale and Arrandale CPU’s.

With Larrabee also looming on the horizon we certainly have an interesting year ahead of us.
