Almost half of US consumer $$$ goes to Apple

NPD research has shown that the revenue share for Apple Macintosh computers in the US retail chains in October has risen to 47.7 percent which is up from 33 percent a year ago. Tech Blog Betanews broke the detailed information a short while ago – not only did they detail the information but they pressed NPD for a report.

Stephen Baker NPD’s vice president of industry analysis says that some of the success can be down to the release of the Core i5 and Core i7 iMacs which were released just before Windows 7 was launched. “You only really had 10 days to catch up some 20 days of lost [Windows PC] sales,” Baker said. “You’re comparing the [iMac] launch month this year to the month last year when people stopped going into stores to buy things,” Baker said. “To some extent it’s a little bit apples and oranges.”

Interestingly it seems both Macintosh and PC based laptops have dropped in overall income, thanks in part to the popularity of the cheap netbook arena which are proving popular with ‘casual’ PC users, not worried about a powerful machine and only needing email and net access.
