HeavenMedia reporters in Taiwan have told us today that Apple are postponing the release of their upcoming Tablet PC until around August or September of 2010. Apple however are apparently in discussions with LG to include a 9.7 inch OLED (Organic).
Another big player involved in the Tablet construction will be Foxconn – and two versions are set to be released. One a 9.7 inch OLED panel and the other a 10.6 inch TFT. As yet there is no other information on internal components or differences between the models.
LG have signed a $500 million purchasing contract with Apple which includes the supply of OLED panels for upcoming products.
OLED technology is pretty much the ‘holy grail’ right now for mass market image quality and it is based around Organic Light Emitting Diodes – they do not require a back light to work and can display intense black levels while using very little power. OLED displays can also display very high contrast ratios.
The only downside is the cost of an OLED panel when compared to a standard LCD screen, a 9.7 OLED screen for instance is priced around $500 which would add significantly to the overall cost of Apple’s Tablet. Hopefully by the second half of 2010 the prices won’t be quite so high.
