Criminals cash in on swine flu

According to Sophos – a British security software firm, criminals are making millions of dollars by selling fake drugs online to deal with the H1N1 flu pandemic.

Sophos have said they have intercepted hundreds of millions of fake spam adverts and websites this year many of which are trying to sell counterfeit antiviral drugs such as Tamiflu to the public.

Tamiflu is an antiviral created and marketed by Roche Holding, a company based in Switzerland. Tamiflu (also known as oseltamivir)  is recommended by the World Health Organisation to help deal with the progression of flu symptoms.

Research has shown that many of these criminal organisations are based in Russia and the hottest targeted countries are Germany, Britain, Canada, The United States Of America and France.

A Sophos spokesman told Reuters that it was a “worrying trend” with the public stockpiling the drugs, particularly in the UK which has been hit the hardest.

“As more and more cases of swine flu….come to light, it is essential that we all resist the panic-induced temptation to purchase Tamiflu online. The criminal gangs working behind the scenes at fake internet pharmacies are putting their customers’ health, personal information and credit card details at risk.”

Other statistics have shown that one network operating out of Russia was making over $16,000 a day from promoting pharmaceutical websites which is a good indication that the 6,250 deaths to date due to the H1N1 virus is causing worldwide panic.
