EA fire 1,500 people and cancel 12 upcoming games

Gaming giant Electronic Arts have stated that they plan on firing 1,500 staff by April of 2010 and they are cancelling the development of 12 games. Surprisingly at the same time they have just bought over Playfish, a developer of popular social networking and games for around $300 million USD, according to our insiders.

The reduction in staffing costs and game cancellations will save EA around $100 million a year and according to our reports the staff being fired are from all areas of the company, including publishing staff and even 100 managers and bosses. EA Redwood and Mythic are the studios getting hit the hardest.

This all comes after recent reports that EA suffered a net loss of $391 from July to September, almost 26% worse than the same period in 2008.

EA boss John Riccitiello said “Laying off employees and closing facilities is never pleasant and we have a lot of passion for those impacted but these cuts are essential for transforming our company”. We can assume those staff due to get the axe will be leaving with a sour taste in their mouth as the $300 million EA used to buy Playfish would have kept them in jobs for many years.
