Google Chrome OS due for release anytime

Google are meant to be offering downloads of their Chrome operating system very shortly if internet rumours prove to be true.

Techcrunch have stated that an early version of the Chrome OS is due for release any day soon with a limited collection of hardware drivers “within a week”.

This summer Google announced that the Chrome OS would be released by the end of the year and have said that it is basically the Google Chrome web browser running on top of the Linux Kernel. This is meant to be a fast running and usable OS for lower powered netbooks and is capable of running on both x86 and ARM processors. The plan is that companies will be releasing systems running the Chrome OS by Q2 of 2010.

Companies already confirmed to be on board are Asus, Adobe, Acer, Hewlett Packard, Qualcomm, Lenovo and Toshiba. Techcrunch are guessing that the first public version of Chrome OS will be running on some versions of the Eee PC netbooks from Asus – which would make sense.
